Default Same IP for addon domains? Help

If I read the forums correctly this is what I understand the process is for adding a new addon domain:
1. change the name server on the registrar to new host
2. wait 24-48 hours for propagation
3. add the new addon domain in WHM cpanel

Seems pretty straight forward, but my question ahs to do with the IP address of the new domain. My main IP for the WHM account is i.e. 1.23.45.67 I didn't think you could use the same IP for the DNS name of the new addon. If so great but how does the "internet" know which page to display as both will point to the same IP? I think I understand how to do it, just not sure I understand how it works. Any help would be appreciated.

The DNS server deals with that. An IP on a HG reseller server may have 100+ domains on it.

You dont need to deal with any IPs other then for the nameservers.

Thanks for the prompt reply. One last question, as we need to change the DNS for the new addon domain 24-48 hours before we can do the addon domain, what will someone see if say the DNS resolves in 24 hours but we haven't created the addon domain yet? Will they just see a blank page? or will they see the template created in the skileton directory?

In all honesty, the 24-48hrs is an old old estimate. It can take less then an hr now adays.

When they go to your site during propagation they will be sent to either your old host (dns cache issue), or they will see this screen: http://diplomat.websitewelcome.com/

Which is the typical cPanel NO WEBSITE HERE content.

After you change the DNS at your registrar just go to cPanel and try right away, odds are it will work.

That isn't exactly true. A lot of companies, such as ISPs or Internet providers, like phone and cable companies use caching DNS server, which update their cache very slowly. So for myself, I get DNS updates in a few minutes. My DNS provider (goDaddy) and my ISP (Comcast) update rather quickly. I have a customer who uses another phone provider and their DNS updates normally take between 24 and 36 hours!!! The phone company is a smaller regional company and they just suck at updates.

So, generally speaking, updates happen very quickly now days, but you can't count on that for all of your customers or yourself. (if it is you, I'd get a new DNS provider)

I didn't know you were supposed to wait!

I always enter the two nameservers at GoDaddy when I register, then go over to my HG cPanel and set up the new add-on there...never had a problem (maybe that's just luck?)

Further to this, I have setup a new domain, created the account and the welcome email comes from vectra.websitewelcome.com instead of my personal nameserver (www.mydomain.com), where do I change that? I changed all the templates to my nameserver.

As well in the welcome letter it says the name server is NameServer: ns231.websitewelcome.com Again where would I change that to show my personal nameserver?

Thanks again!

I assume you are using WHMAP? I havn't used it in about a year but you need to set-up which NS to use in the Server set-up area.

as for the vectra.websitewelcome.com, what do you mean, the e-mails are comming from addres@vectra.websitewelcome.com ?

Thanks I have the IP/DNS figured out now.

Yes the emails are coming from New account on vectra.websitewelcome.com (mydomain.com) and the nameserver listed is ns231.websitewelcome.com

I edited the templates and just checked them again, all ref to websitewelcome have been replaced with my nameserver.

For actual IP Address purchase, you should contact sales I think. At the very least they can point you in the right direction.

By chance, did you mean "Domain Name" rather than "IP Address"? It's not the usual setup to buy hard-coded IP Addresses for more than a few specific needs.

If you meant you wanted to buy Domain Names, go to:
http://www.hostgator.com/domains
and purchase them there. You can purchase them anywhere you like, by the way. The process and the editing is basically the same at all of them. Some have nice discounts if you buy in bulk.

Once your transaction is complete, fill in the contact info and then change the default nameserver addresses to the numbers in your Welcome Email. They have the form: nsXXX.hostgator.com where XXX is as shown in your email.

Sounds like you're a Reseller? If so, you're on your own after that if you're using the WHM. (I'm a Shared account, so never saw it.)

BUT..
If you are doing it with your own cPanel, go to Parked Domains, or Addon Domains to distribute the new Domain Names you just bought, as you wish.

Parked means they resolve to your "web root", the public_html directory, just the same as your primary Domain.

Addon is for directing the new Domain to a subdirectory *under* your public_html. It inherits all the rights to run server software just like the primary and Parked Domains, but when people put the "address" (a form of the Domain Name, actually) into the web browser, it goes right to that subdiretory.

Sub-Domain is easiest to think of as just a form of Addon domain, pointed to a directory under public_html as well. But with Subdomains you can create all sorts of your own names, "piggybacked" on any of the Parked or Addon names.

I've sort of gone overboard lately and have 5 Parked, 1 Addon, and 6 Subdomains.

Hope that helped. And if you stopped reading at "Reseller", sorry I bored ya.
