Default Running custom executable on shared package?

Hi all..
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to ask for help or not but here goes anyway!

I've been asked to write a small app that checks swf (flash) files for url's - and the user would be informed if any of the url's in the flash movie are a) not valid or b) point to undesirable locations such as tracking sites..

The method I'm using to analyse the swf's is run either Flare or Flasm from php - which will extract either the swf's bytecode or scripts for analysis. (http://www.nowrap.de/flare.html - http://www.nowrap.de/flasm.html)

These apps are not processor or memory intensive and dont do anything other than write out a small text file..

However, it seems that I am not allowed to run "custom" executables on the shared package - attempting to run the 64 bit version of the executables will return a "cannot execute binary file" which is expected - but running the 32 version will result in an apache core dump - which even backtracing is pretty useless

So, I was wondering if it's possible to allow these apps to run at all?

Thank you in advance,
Hugo

When I run the scripts on my local apache server everything works fine

oops, ignore the "When I run the scripts on my local apache server everything works fine " at the end of the message - excessive copy/pasting on my part

Linux executables compiled in one system do not necessarily run in another system.
You are talking about Linux executables, aren't you?

Yes, I should have made it clear I was talking about Linux executables.. The download page(s) for Flare and Flasm dont have any builds for anything other than "linux" so I assumed that it was a pretty generic executable and would run on any linux box - after all it runs fine with no config on my OpenSuse 11.1 and Ubuntu 7.1 boxes.. My boxes are of course generic workstations with little extra security etc.

If I can't get it to work within my deadlines then I guess I'll get my client to get a dedicated server and compile the apps from source - that should cure any problems but I must admit I'm really hoping the answer is something simpler - something like "rename the executables to 'itsoktorunme' and it'll all work"

thanks

Oh - just a thought - it couldn't have anything to do with phpsuexec could it? Would an app run successfully from user "nobody"? I've done a tiny bit of research into phpsuexec but have found nothing helpful yet..

Can I suggest you email support at hostgator dot com asking whether you can run such a script in a shared environment.

Remember "shared" means you are limited as to what you can do so as not to "disturb" your neighbors.

Thank you striddy - I'll send them an email now.. And yes, I'm familiar with the issues involved with shared hosting - I guess I was just somehow hoping that the usual rules didn't apply to me for some reason
