Default RSS to Blog Script Disabled

As of January 31, 2006 the following scripts have been banned from our servers:

http://RSStoBlog.com
http://RSSContentBuilder.com
http://RSSFeedReader.com
http://SubmitYourURL.info

If you find the need to use any of these scripts please reply to this thread and this thread only as we are using it to work with the developers of the software.

We are currently waiting to hear back from a representative so we can find a working solution that will not cause the servers to overload and go offline.

Any chance of a compromise?

For example running the cron jobs that kick off the RSS2B3 projects at much lower frequencies and for less projects at a time to reduce the load on the CPU?

I know I have always tried to work to running a maximum of 10 RSS2B3 projects per instance of RSS2B3 so that each time the cron job runs it's only posting to 10 blogs. I also alternate the cron jobs at 5 minute intervals between accounts so they aren't all running at the same time per server. Staggered.

I would be happy running my RSS2B3 jobs once a day or once every couple of days if that meant I could still run them eg posting to a blog once a day or once every couple of days...

I think the instructions that come with RSS2B3 refer to running the cron job once a minute which I thought was overkill and bound to overwork the CPU which is why I set mine to run once an hour and to only 10 blogs at a time.

Kind regards

Lee

We are in communication with the authors of the script and hopefully we can get the best solution out of this situation.

I'm confused. The folder containing the RSS feed on my site at www.bitwisemag.com had its permissions set to 000 so the feed was not accessible (I subsequently recreated the folder). When I reported this to Technical Support I was referred to this thread. I am not familiar with the scripts mentioned here. I have a plain vanilla RSS XML file. So why does this affect me?

best wishes

I'm in the same situation. I have my own RSS generating script that I wrote myself, my RSS folder is set to 000 as well.

Why am I affected?

It seems to me that either your script/s are using too much system resources on your server or you've been tagged for a serious potential security breach?

Kinda falls under this although it's not explicitly stated....yet;
Quote:
7.) Resource Usage
Users may not initiate the following:
a) Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.
b) Run any type of interactive real-time chat applications that require server resources. Remotely-hosted services are fully allowed.
c) Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, such as IRCD.
d) Run any software that interfaces with an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network.
e)Run any bit torrent
f) Run any gaming servers such as counter-strike, half-life, battlefield1492, etc

I too would hope for some solution for an rss reader.

Just curious if the RSS parsing using Pear method described here:
http://www.spoono.com/php/tutorials/tutorial.php?id=46
would be any less strenuous on the servers?

Contact Support. I was told that all directories named \rss were set to 000 in a slightly over-zealous attempt to disable the banned script. The support team can reset permissions. Alternatively you can do what I did. Rename \rss to \oldrss then recreate your \rss directory.

best wishes

Are there any further updates to this issue?

The last I was told by RSStoblog owners is that hostgator is banning this software altogether.

Hostgator, please provide alternative solutions. Otherwise, I may be compelled to move my webhosting package to another company that doesn't ban this.

Hi,

I am wanting to use a RSS aggregation plugin for wordpress. I wont be flooding the blog with RSS feeds just 2 or 3 news feeds about my favorite football team. I also have 2 wrestling news sites I host and want to aggregate their feeds on a 3rd. Would this be permissible?

I would also like to use the plug-in that WBW is asking about. We have used it on other servers, and had no issues at all. Thanks!
