Hi,
I wish to do following: 1. resell hosting by making my own packages (space, etc.) and 2. offer unlimited (virtually) space Now since, I am already a reseller I guess these are not possible so; if I shift to VPS, I will probably be able to that? but, what about these then? A. Will I still be able to retain my free WHMCS license? B. If I have my 5 months to renewal, will my finance be adjusted from reseller to VPs? 3. Will hostgator still be monitoring my account as it does in reseller? (like sending emails about spamming, etc.) 4. Will hostgator still be supporting me with technical issues (considering naive in vps) Please help.................. anyone or staff. Thanks in advance |

I did the exact same thing, all they do is transfer the cPanel accounts, but you will lose your current packages, but the accounts will retain the old packages.
WHMCS is $5 per month which is reasonable. VPS Level 3 and above is "FULLY MANAGED" and I know it too, because when I did PCI Compliance tweaking hostgator did most of the technical work. Again, VPS is fully managed. Only thing they won't support is 3rd party applications such as a CMS, game servers, etc. As for your 5 months renewal, they will apply that balance to your VPS, but I think you need to pay 1 month first.

WHMCS license will cost you + five dollars additional to the monthly cost of the VPS. So with a VPS, if the server cost 30 bucks a month and you need a WHMCS license, the server will then cost you 35 bucks per month,

Unless you know what you are doing, get at least a VPS3.

I have no expert in reselling, but I do feel managing reseller accounts on a VPS is going to be more difficult.
1. Shared hosts(like HG) offer unlimited resources, but they do monitor the CPU usage of each account and suspend the high resource sites ASAP. If you follow similar model, it will be difficult for you to manage. 2. Hostgator will take care of technical issues related to LAMP / Hardware, but they will not monitor individual accounts like they do on shared hosting. There is limit on number of emails sent per hour etc, which they are not going to take care of. Personally I recommend using reseller account itself, as it means less headache to you. Even with so called fully managed server, you will need to spend time on monitoring server, accounts etc.

Trust me a VPS is a step up from a reseller account especially if you are hosting CMS websites. My CMS websites became almost 4x faster when I upgraded from reseller. Not sure why, but probably has to do with a faster connection. If you WGET a 100mb file from cachefly.com I reach about 11.9MB/s howver on a reseller it starts out slow below 400KB/s and gradually rises to 2MB/s
