Im looking into signing up for a reseller program here and I've been reading through the forums to get a few questions answered and for the most part it help. However the more I read, the more i confuse myself, so some of these questions will be simple and stupid so bare with me.
Here's my situation. I have a client whose website i am redesigning and I want to move them from their current host, who they are paying for the domain and hosting, to my reseller account(once i sign up). From what i understand i can either change their DNS settings to point to my nameservers, or i can do a domain transfer. So here come the questions. 1. if i were to just switch the dns, would that mean that i am now hosting their website? 2. Does this mean that my client will end up with a bill from me(for hosting) and a bill form their current host(for the domain) and i wont have control over what they pay for the domain? (hope that made sense) 3. Once my website is set up, with emails and w/e i need, does auto pilot take care of the full registration process? including the whois and registration with a registrar at the prices i specify in WHM? If so, who does it register with? I hope I was clear in what i just said, any help would be appriciated. Thanks |

If you switch DNS, don't the files from the old account need to be moved to the new account?

If you're just having a few clients and not selling hosting to random people it may not (probably won't) be worth it to use autopilot. Just use the WHM interface to make the accounts.

Sam, I'm assuming that I'd use the eNom account that comes with the reseller account. So there are options in auto pilot to set it up to use my eNom account, correct?
slapshotw, this is a stupid question, but i have to be 100% sure before i go through with this. To register without the use of auto pilot, I'd log into my eNom account and create a domain there, then configure the account in WHM? And can autopilot be installed at anytime? Or is it best to do it from the beginning? Thanks again. |

I've got another question, this time about e-mails. I've read that you can make a cpanel backup when doing the switch to transfer over emails or you make a backup using an ftp. Problem is that with my clients current host (mentioned above) they dont use cpanel, but websiteOS 4 (i think its called), and i havent figured out if backups can even be made. Also, it doesnt appear that i can get ftp access to emails and such.
The client has 1 fairly active email, and 2 semi-active ones, so I was wondering if it is possible to make a backup in outlook, then make the switch, then import the old emails. (if there are any other ways, or something i am missing please share it) Hope that made sense. Thanks |

I don't think i was as clear as i could be. I understand what you're saying Sam, but i want to know if it's possible to transfer the emails and accounts to my reseller if i cant make a back up with their host. I'm wondering if i could just recreate the email accounts and import the old emails through outlook, so they at least have a record of the old emails.

If you're using IMAP you can set outlook to push the old messages to the HG server, otherwise, they'll still just be sitting on your comp. This could be done with IMAP though.

Apart from the control panel if the server's use the same MTAs and pop servers you can expect to grab the "mailboxes" from FTP and put them to the new server from FTP.

Hey if I use the WHM to setup new accounts, is there a way to send out a 'welcome email' that gives the user all of their details like hostgator does when you first register?
