I am Hostgator costumer about 5 years. In this time I have tried shared accounts and reseller account. I had about 2-3 shared accounts and 2 reseller accounts (copper and aluminum). Last year both of the reseller accounts became really slow (sever load was oover 10) which was very annoying. We had about 100 active accounts (mostly joomla) and from time to time we experienced server downs and other stuff. Hostgator has great support, but service became very bad. So we moved reseller account to another hosting company which was new and had great offer with VPS. So we made a deal, took VPS for this resller accounts but we left those BIG accounts at HG baby croch.
This VPS has 3GB of RAM, and 100GB diskspace. This is the point where problem started. VPS load is about 1, but support is without experience. Sometimes server goes down and I received just short explanation that some sites had SPAM attack. I am searching for solutions, but I am not server administrator even I know much about this stuff I don't want to spend my time learning new stuff. Right now we have like 150 accounts (mostly joomla). I had few problems with SPAM (on Hostgator) but it was small problem comapring to this. I received Email from HG and I suspend that account. Right now I dont really know what is going down untill I see server down ![]() I was thinking about this. To buy reseller account Copper or Silver and 1 or 2 shared accounts for some very busy sites (news portal etc). Since I dont plan to grow this bussines, I need just to keep my costumers happy this should be enough. But I am in doubt about Hostgator now, I really don't want to exeprience server overload and downtimes. I am affraid to take VPS since I dont know which one will suite my needs.Any advice?

I have also been a hostgator customer for over 6 years and have had reseller accounts as well as VPS accounts and dedicated servers. I did not like the VPS accounts due to the fact that they were unreliable and would go down from time to time as well as the fact that certain software could not be installed on them. Reseller accounts do not allow root access and you can not install software.. For me a dedicated server is the way to go.

Rangermoore,
Our VPS servers are very stable, and you can install any software you would like that is compatible with *Nix. Can you PM me the issues you had and any tickets you had with our support staff?

Redwolf,
Can you send me some more information via PM? Also any tickets you might have with our support staff? I'll be glad to personally assist you with this. You should not be receiving slow downs on our reseller hosting. Thank you,

The software I had running TGPs with on the VPS server slowed the server down to a slow walk every time I tried to process galleries. I had the same software running on reseller accounts and never had any issues.. When I made the move to a VPS server things went south... When I tried to install certain trade scripts I had issues with the VPS server not being able to process certain scripts. I feel the VPS servers are NOT a good value for the resources that they currently offer.. Money better spent with a dedicated server.. Just my thoughts...

rangermoore,
What level VPS did you have? In certain instances yes dedicated is definitely better than a VPS. You were coming from a very powerful reseller server to a slice of a server, so if your scripts were resource intensive then a dedicated should have been recommended to you in the first place. So yes, I agree dedicated in your situation was the best deal for you.

I agree 100% with you.. Yes the scripts were VERY resource intensive... All the static site that I had on the VPS were just fine.. So all in all your right, it depends what kinds of scripts you need to run that determines what kind of server a person needs..I was on a level 4 plan... BTW... I still LOVE Hostgator and would NEVER go anywhere else... Hostgator has been very good to me over the years... ![]() ![]()
