Default Reseller Account

Hi,

I've been thinking of setting up a reseller account here at HostGator but I have some problems and some questions about. As of right now I have a Share Account with an active site alright going. My first and for most question is: Can I upgrade my account to a reseller with out having to say close my current site and reuploaded everything, set-up, etc. Will I be able to upgrade with out chaning my current account, maybe just pay the differents or something.

OK next is about the reseller in general. Now on the basic plan it saids I get 50GB of B/W and 5GB of space. Now does that mean I have 5GB of space and 50GB of monthly B/W and with every account I set up gets the same? Or I have to give them a limited amout and my total sites can't go over the total I get? In the case of the first part, would I be able to create different packages such as one gets say only 1GB and the top gets the full 5GB for example.

Next question is I can set the prices to what I want, now how much of that goes to you or do I just pay the monthly price and if I charge say $10 a month on my resellers, thats all mine?

Another question I have is can I set up free accounts? For example my web site is broken up into 2 types of sites on two domain names, would I be able to myself create a reseller account for free?

I understand if its illegal for me to say have free hosting threw the resellers and all but for say myself to make break up my web site so that say I didn't want to use up all my b/w on my main site.

Basically my idea is to run my site as I am now, and add a hosting section at prices I can sell. I'm not very good at reselling as my last host I was one I set up reselling and in 2 years never sold one account, however I was not allowed to open free accounts as part of the money that was paid went to my host.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

HostGator should transfer your account for you.

http://www.hostgator.com/upgrade.php

All of the accounts you resell totaled up must be equal to or less than 50GB bandwidth and 5GB space.

Your packages can cost and have whatever limits you want.

You don't have to give HostGator part of you income. You must still pay the monthly package fee though.

You can setup free accounts via your WHM.

Unless of course you go with a larger plan, in which you get more space and bandwith.

Your site can be transfered over to a reseller server with very little downtime, usually none. We will move your files and redirect your DNS, then you can leave your shared account open until your domains nameservers have propogated to the new server.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I'll have to give it some though as currently the lower plan of reseller is a bit under in space to what I have with my current account, which would mean that I would need to go up a higher plan. In which case I need a good game plan before I go into this so that I am able to sell a few resllers frist so that I can make up the differences in monthly price.

Hi. I just bought the Aluminum plan(50GB of B/W and 5GB of space).

so if i have the following package

Plan A
100 Megs of space
5 Gigs of transfer

does that mean that i can have only at most 10 accounts total if all of my accounts were on this package?

Yes it means that. You'd still be leaving a lot of space on the table though. I'd advise making plans with less bandwidth.

As a reseller, you can't oversell, so you plans should fit exactly the amount of space/bandwith that you have for 10 accounts that would be 500meg/5g.

10 Accounts out of an Aluminum plan would cost you $2.50 per account, so you could sell them for as little as $5.00 per month and make a profit of $25.00 per month.

However, you could get as much as $8.00 a month for that account on the open market and $15.00 per month if you did something special like rolled it into a website production or something.

Just some food for thought. Reseller plans are not a good way to run a business so you will need to plan to get out of reseller hosting and into a dedicated server as soon as possible!! Resellers plans greatly increase your exposure and business risks as well as hurt your downtime percentage and email relieablity.

You can use your storage and bandwith as you like. On one of my servers, I have a personal webpage with 12 gig of space and 50gig of bandwith a month and I use all of the bandwidth every month! My reseller accounts only get 5db, so I've got like 10 of them in my personal account. My whole account gets 3000gb a month, so I've got plenty to spare.

Hi

I am busy shopping around for an alternative hosting company and have been browsing your forum for a while. Can you explain what you mean by the above? - The last sentence in particular?

Thanks!

He means that when you're on a reseller plan, you're sharing a server with a bunch of others and you have no control over what they do. With a dedicated server, you have many more resources at your disposal along with the knowledge that anything happening in the server is under your control/supervision.

Serra, is that interpretation correct?

That is exactly what I meant. I'm not saying the HG is bad or that HG sucks, I'm just speaking generally about shared systems. HG's shared systems are not any worse than other companies systems (expect those that don't yet have PHPSuExec installed, which I'm sure you can request getting on one of those machines if you want or not if you don't).

I didn't fully understand how bad shared systems were until I got out of that environment. Then I realized what I had been missing.

I used to have at least one site suspended per week on my reseller account and now I've only had one site suspended since July (had a script out of date, my fault).
