Post Requirement analysis

Hi Guys,

It's great to be a part of this forum. I wanted to subscribe to hostgator, but before proceeding I need some of my queries to be cleared.

I have a domain and a shared hosting webspace which is currently hosted by site http://www.justhost.com This is relatively new.

I have an older webspace hosted by another company and I have not completely moved to justhost. Currently I have just created a database in justhost.com. Now as you guys know they also provide similar services like unlimited bandwidth, webspace, cpanel, mysql etc.

The situation is as follows. I have a .net program which my clients use. My program access the database at regular intervals to check for new messages. The intervals maybe around once every 15-20 min or so. And my application is used by a few hundred users. Little over a weekago justhost guys shutdown my webserver as they said that database usage was very high. I figured that it maybe because my program once when it establishes a connection, it keeps it open. So I modified my program and whenever it connects to database it also closes the connection once data has been fetched. This seemed fine to me and I thought it would pose no problems. Now a few days ago, justhost sent a notification that my database has been renamed as usage was high.

The problem right now is that my new justhost server is only used for database purposes. I have not even transferred my files and other data. And my program connects to the db and closes the connection. And the load is high according to them. Isnt this a little absurd. If I completely move, put my files and my program downloads those files then wont load increase even more.

What I want is the following :

- An inexpensive web hosting
- Database access, my program should be able to query the db
- Database can be hit for client verification purposes (that will happen whenever my software is started)
- Database can be hit to check for new messages, that can happen either once in 15 min or at a little longer duration.
- The software will be used by hundreds of users
- Files will be kept on the server and the software will download those files regularly
- I may post flash videos and other content on website later.
- It's a small business site.

To get those features and to have uninterrupted usage what should I do ? Which plan should I go for? I do want an issue because database is used or load is high or so. I cannot affort dedicated hosting. Moreover my site wont be a big one, it will be a small business site. Right now i am having database trouble as i described above.

Please advice.

Thank you,

Saurabh

Best way is to contact HG for an official answer: http://www.hostgator.com/contact.shtml

It sounds like most of the requirements could be handled by a shared or reseller server. The one thing that concerns me is that JustHost disabled the database on two separate occasions. While I can't confirm that will be the case with us, it's likely that if you are using heavy CPU from database usage that it could occur.

In this case I would recommend a VPS (level 3 is the minimum you can get that will run cPanel) so you have full access to 100% of the resources you've purchased without the risk of having the database disabled.

Should I take shared hosting. If the database thing can be managed then it is ok. I will try from my site to ensure that load is kept at minimum and things go smooth.
