Default Request for enabling mod_gzip on Shared Hosting

I'd like to suggest having mod_gzip enabled by default on shared hosting plans. Currently I was told that the only way to get mod_gzip enabled is to get a dedicated server, which is kind of a bummer.

Thanks

I agree, mod_gzip could be a deal breaker for me in the future... (20 months later ... :-D)

Hello,

mod_gzip is bad about filling of /tmp (which can in turn cause other problems) and also drives the load on the server up which is why we don't allow it.

You are right about the server load increase and filling up the /tmp is something new for me! It is something that would speed up the site a lot, what a pity we cant take advantage of mod_gzip!

Not a complaint, just thinking loud!

yes, I would like it too. really unfortunate without it as some software I am using would really go a lot faster with it

Of course, with unlimited disk space for shared accounts "filling tmp/" isn't a factor any longer.

It would still be a problem. The tmp/ folder is a system folder on the server, not within the user account. It is generally not allotted much space (on my server it's 1 gig.)

Please don't let them off that easy. "Unlimited" means unlimited. It doesn't mean "unlimited if it exists within your directory".

If they didn't take this into account when declaring the accounts unlimited, they should have. I bet there are many server functions that might normally take up space in folders outside a shared account folder.

Anyway, it's academic right now since they haven't declared load to be unlimited.

Personally, I think mod_Deflate should be enabled even on the shared hosting plans for host gator to stay competitive. I'm actually thinking about leaving to another host that offers this as a similar price point.

There is no such thing as "unlimited" the harddrives on the servers only hold so much with out being upgraded. "unlimited" simply means they do not have a restriction on how much space you use as long as using it in the correct mannner, meaning not using hacked/nulled software etc.

I can say that in fact "unlimited" is a brand over the internet. "unlimited" is use to give the customer impression that he can do whatever he wants but in fact everything is limited. No movies, no software etc (according to TOS) will never be a problem for any company who is providing web hosting services.
