Default Req: fantastico/Joomla update

Hi there,

I was wondering if joomla in the fantastico scripts can be updated to the current version of joomla 1.0.12?

Thank you,
Randy

Forget fantastico. Just install it yourself-- it's very easy and you can ask for help. It's a much more secure installation when you do it yourself anyway.

Thanks, I tried it and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Got it installed with no problems. Now I just need to go learn Joomla, haha. Should be fun though.

If you managed to install it, learning how it works should be a breeze... It's a great CMS.

In what way is it more secure if you install it yourself?

Two of the reasons:
  1. If you install it yourself, you're always getting the latest version because you're getting it from the site. You can patch it and update it as soon as the new versions come out. With Fantastico, you have to wait until both fantastico and HostGator update the installations.
  2. If you use fantastico, your database names and many other script and settings names are all the same. This can be a big security problem, because there are a lot of hackers out there just looking for these commonly used settings.

No program offered by fantastico is hard enough to install on it's own that it makes fantastico worth it.

You can install with Fantastico and then upgrade it by yourself without any problems. Of course if you upgrade it by yourself it's not possible to upgrade it using Fantastico any more.

When you install Joomla there are only these you set:
- Host Name (*)
- MySQL Database Name (*)
- MySQL User Name (*)
- MySQL Password (*)
- MySQL Table Prefix (*)
- Site name
- Your E-mail
- Admin password
- Admin User name (this you set only in Fantastico)

Those that are set by Fantastico I have marked with (*)
The database name and username are always <username>_joom<#>, where "username" is your cPanel username, and "#" is a number starting from 1.
The database password Fantastico creates is unique and strong, probably much stronger than you would ever use if you installed Joomla by yourself.

Admin username and password you set by yourself if you use Fantastico. And notice that if you install Joomla by yourself you are NOT asked for the admin username (it will be "admin"), but if you use Fantastico you can set it to whatever you want.

Installing Joomla is very easy... when you know how to do it. But if you don't want to find out how to do it, and upload the files (or the installation package and extraxt it in the server), create the database and database user by yourself, and install it by yourself you can just install it with Fantastico
I have heard that there are applications that are really unsecure if they are installed using Fantastico, but in Joomla's case that is not true.

Generally I always recomend my clients install it themselves if they are capable. Asside from the security of passwords you mentioned, it generally make sub-par installations.

I know Drupal hates em...

I don't use fantastico for anything anymore. My reasons are simple:

1) you have to wait for Fantistico to be updated after your ap is
2) if installed by fantastico, and updated manually fantastico is trashed
3) If you are a neat freak and accidentally delete the fantistico file in the web root, you have to re-install and uninstall through fantastico.

Don't get me wrong Fantastico rocks for newbs, but if you read the install me files in your favorite GNU Apps, you don't need it.

It has a nice menu and allows apps to be quickly installed to see how they work. If they seem like something that is usable, they can always be installed properly later.

Also be sure to check out the joomla forums, they have thousands of posts on common issues that people come upon. So usually an answer to a question is just a search away.

A good way to learn how to install many of these packages is to let Fantastico do it, then examine the config.php file to see what kind of settings the package is expecting and how Fantastico set them.

Download the config.php file for safekeeping, then deinstall the Fantastico installation (which does not delete your SQL file or the user it has created for the package). Now install the package manually (the lazy way to do this, extending this method, is to upload it and the config.php file you obtained via the Fantastico install. However the only benefit will be if you have obtained a newer version than Fantastico is currently using.)

This is an old thread. Joomla! in Fantastico is currently up to date... v1.0.15

There's really no 'move'. If you install it with Fantastico and manually update it -- it works fine. Just don't try to update it with Fantastico afterward.
