is it not harder to change hosts just because you don't want to set up an automatic payment? to change your account and website(s) hosting because someone else didn't get email? while some notification would be very appropriate, we are responsible for our accounts and our billings.

It is certainly your option to choose not to have automatic payments but that does mean dealing with the negatives. You can complain about the system and how easy it would be to do this or that. It is also simple to set up a reminder yourself for the 28th (or whatever day you choose) using Outlook or any number of programs.

I'm sure their bills arrive promptly and without any hassle.
Well I can speak to the fact of 1and1. I have about 29 hosting accounts with them and they email you 30 days before your domain expires, then @ 15 days and finally @ 5 days.

They are really good about billing, but terrible at support.

Then go in and pay your bill on the day you know it comes due. You know what day it is due every month, don't you?

Excellent solution. Mark it on your calendar, or set up a reminder timer on your cell phone so that on that date each month, and alarm goes off. It sounds to me that you have your mind set on leaving, so if none of the many solutions being provided to you right now are good enough, then good luck finding another host as good as HostGator.
