IMO, Hostgator's biggest weakness is registrations. After usin many registrars over several years, I have found Dreamhost to be the best fer MY wants and needs, but if Hostgator had $10 domains with free private regs that can be turned on and off at will with no extra charges (GoDaddy) to turn em back on (not to mention a separate whole site to have to deal with fer managin em), with good DNS controls, I would transfer all 20 some odd of mine in and would be hopin to use yall fer EVERYTHANG all the way up to my one day to come needs fer expandin to several dedicateds.
Yall either need to become yer own, or negotiate the ability to offer the above deal from the souless evil asses at the Domain Squatter's Holy Temple known as Enom. Just thank though, if yall was a domain registrar, yall could set us up as both domain and hostin resellers! Man, yall would rule the web over time, couplin Brent's personal and business ethic, with offerin ALL the main web services AND havin it to where others can sell em feryee... WHOOOOO!!!! Man... I can just see all that commerce energy FLOWIN!!!! |

We do offer domain registration services at http://www.hostgator.com/domains however we can't beat a deal like what you found at Dreamhost currently. We are an ICANN accredited registrar, but we haven't gotten the backend system written yet to process domain registrations ourselves, so we use Enom until we do get that written and get the kinks worked out.

I'd prefer to not have all my hosting and domains in the same spot anyways...

It is awesome to know that that is all in the works. Hale, I would pay $15, but if would HAVE to include the free private regs. I would suppose that yall know that that is totally an expected offerin these days. I really am glad to know that yall are headed that way though, and even if it aint $10 (which is 4 more than I paid fer several years at 1&1, but then needed more DNS control than they offered, and also to be able to reg multiple years without havin to still renew yearly with them... the TIME stayed on the reg, but you still payed them the rent fer the year!).

I would prefer the opposite, as long as I know I can trust the company, and with Hostgator, I know that if I gite into an unreasonable bind I could depend on Brent himself to take a look. I do not thank I have very much fear of the Gator doin me wrong. I would probly him baby sit my 7 year old son sight unseen. Well... probly not... but you know what I'm sayin! I would never risk my boy.

Well just on the off chance they went out of business... for some freak reason... that could mean your site and domain are hard to get a handle on....

The thing is though, even your domain registrar could go out of business. So if your registrar goes under and we don't then your site is still offline until you get a new domain name, change the domain name here get it all back up and then email everyone that visits your site that you lost your old domain, or worse.. I'd prefer to have all of my eggs in one basket in that case anyways. If I had to lose my domain I'd probably just want to rebuild the site from the ground up.

Are you sure that's how it works? If the registrar goes out of business I don't think you lose the domain.
When registerfly went out of business a few months ago ICANN eventually stepped in and fixed the issue. Supposedly they have new rules now to speed that process up even more. By the way, that's why I don't use these ultra-discount domain providers everybody seems to love. The extra $1.50 savings isn't worth it.

I wasn't aware of that, though I do suppose that's a good backup plan. If we were to go under, ICANN could get you the domain, and ThePlanet.com could most likely get your data since they are our DataCenter and Upstream provider. We have a pretty good deal worked out with them, so if that ever did happen, I'm pretty sure Brent could call them up and get something worked out.

I'd gladly bite the gatorbait if the domain prices were $10 or below, but $15 is twice what I'm paying now.

Yeah... $10 or so with private regs included is THE sweet spot... but I would be willing to go, say $12 without much hesitation.

I'd go $12 I think. The support here rocks. I'd like to have everything in one place.

Unfortunately we don't even get domains for $12 if you included WHOIS privacy.

Well, they are plenty of companies that apparently DO, so what I would do if I was yall is find out what THEY do... and copy THAT. I doubt there is a special mafia that let Dreamhost into the club and wouldn't let yall in too.

Yes, I know the difference between $10 domains and $12 domains are breaking my business.

Well, Mr. Contrary, I have owned several hundred domains, and presently have more than 20... it adds up quickly.

Wish our domains down under were that cheap.
