Smile Regarding VPS

Hello,

I currently have the shared business plan with HostGator but am considering upgrading to a VPS managed level 3 with cPanel.

I am just wondering if and when I choose to do this will HostGator move my site free of charge for me or will I have to do this myself??

Thanks

Rick

Anytime you are upgrading to a better plan we will move everything for free.

Default Re: Regarding VPS

I recently moved from business plan to VPS. HG did a nice job of transferring everything, but there were a couple of hiccups in my experience you may want to know about.

1. I did not fully understand that having multiple IP's would cost extra for set up. The VPS sign up page makes it appear (w/radio buttons) that multiple IP's is a simple setup. Either you need to know how to do this yourself, or they will charge. I've put my plan for multiple dedicated IP's on hold for now.

2. I was confused at first by the basic WHM and CPANEL interfaces that the set-up complete email points you to. A helpful phone tech finally pointed out that my "business plan" CPANEL was still accessible (on the VPS) via www.domain.com/cpanel

Overall a positive experience and I am seeing performance benefits.

Rick just be careful.

I signed up for the level 7 VPS plan.

Here is my first email I received:

Quote:
Hello,

I'm starting the process of transferring your account. I'll update you when it's completed.

Sincerely,

After a day nothing was done and I sent an e-mail. Here is the response (From the same person):

Quote:
Hello,

The free Transfer service for our VPS customers does not cover the VPSs that do not include cPanel/WHM.
Without having cPanel and WHM installed all of the services for the server will have to be installed manually (this includes bind, Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc.). This is a very time consuming process and for this we charge an Administrative Services Fee. For Administrative Services we charge a fee of $75 an hour billed in half hour increments, with a minimum charge of $37. If you would like an exact quote please let us know and we will be happy to provide you with one. If you would like to have cPanel/WHM installed plaese upgrade to VPS Level 3 with cPanel package. After the upgrade we would be able to proceed with the transfer for free for you. Please let us know how you would like to proceed and we will be glad Sincerely,

Things are not as easy as Hostgator are making it out to be.

I have still to be contacted by Hostgator as I get no response from them.

Just be aware.

1. How is the OP's situation at all like yours and thus appropriate for your warning? He has cPanel on his package. You don't.

HG has always given disclaimers about transferring FROM hosting firms without cPanel, and it's just as complicated transferring TO a VPS without it.

2. Sounds to me as if HG is waiting for you to let it know whether you want to pay for the move or upgrade your package to include cPanel.

Actually it's MUCH more difficult.

You should tell this person.

I am unclear why you all don't read from the same script. These types of things on these forums, and on the phone, and in emails, and in tickets are causing confusion.

I seem to get different answers every time to the same exact (unrelated to this thread) question.

Has HG thought about hiring some of you peer support people? You seem to give some of the best answers.

Thanks, qF, that makes rianvisser's warning to the OP look even less relevant.

That's what posting here is intended to do...it was just an unofficial guess, anyway.

HostGator moved our sites FREE with NO problems at all. It will look just like your old shared account most likely. Now after the move I spent quite allot of time separating the addon domain sites to their own Cpannel accounts. Over all the move has been GREAT & so far as usual HG service has been GREAT for the VPS. I have noticed a fairly regular failure with Name Servers though so still working on figuring that out.

We plan on upgrading our VPS a level or two this year.

Can you explain to me how to separate addon domains into their own Cpanel accounts? I have just bought HG level 3 with Cpanel/WHM. Thanks
