Hi everyone. I've decided to go with hostgator as my webhost.
I have a simple question. I'm going to have a small personal website only. My website is html and css only. I'm going to need to upload my index.html file to the public_html folder. Here's my question. I was looking at the cpanel demo and noticed theirs a file named: index.php What should I do with the index.php file? Can I move it to another folder? Or should I delete it? Or can the index.html file and index.php file co exist together? I'm familiar with cpanel as I've used it with a free host before. Uploaded all my files with "filezilla" into the public_html directory. The other host didn't have a index.php file already in the public_html directory. I uploaded my website and it worked good. This index.php file has me stumped though. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Yes, they can co-exist, but only one of them will be loaded by default. I think that will be your index.html file on Host Gator servers unless you change the order of precedence in an .htaccess file. In any case, if it's not the one you want, you can rename, move or delete the other one as you prefer.

Hello,
Im pretty sure that your index.html file will override the index.php file so you can either leave it there or delete it if you want to.

If there is an index.php in your account at that point, just delete it.

@cleanxhost: Heh Heh. Sorry, but at least we seem to agree and aren't confusing the OP with conflicting advice.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone. You've all been so helpful. Now it's time to put in my order. Wait for my email, then head over to godaddy and change the nameservers.

I just signed up for the "Baby" hosting. After signing up I received a welcome email from hostgator welcoming me to the family. The email stated that I would receive another email which would contain my dns server stuff in about 20 minutes. (I'm paraphrasing here)
Actually, I think I received it in about 10 minutes. I've already went to godaddy and changed the nameservers. I'm very impressed with the speed. Good job hostgator. Now I only have to wait for the dns propitation or whatever it's called to take place.
