I am interested in switching my web hosting and domain registration to Host Gator, but I have a question about the domain aspect.
Is WHOIS privacy offered by Host Gator, and is it available for a domain that is going to be transferred? I would like to keep both services registered with the same company as to make billing easier, but is it at all possible for a previously registered domain to be made private after a transfer? If it is not possible at Host Gator, can it be done elsewhere, and if it is needed to find such a service elsewhere, does anybody have any suggestions with whom to do it with? I thank everyone for their time, and would appreciate a response. |

There are lots of good reasons to keep registration and hosting at separate companies, such as much easier recovery for you if a disaster hit one of the firms.

Thanks for the answers.
I see that having the domain, and hosting at separate companies seems to be the general consensus, and I think I'll pursue that route. Does anybody have any suggestions about companies they have had good experience with for their domain names? |

Not long ago, there was a long thread about domain registrar preferrences. It came down to godaddy and namecheap, depend on which control interface you preferred.

I really like eNom if you have a lot of domains. If you have one or two they're probably not the best because it's a bit pricier, but when you have many, bulk administration becomes very easy.

Thanks for the suggestions once again. I have decided to use Godaddy for my domain registration, and Host Gator for my Web Host.
It's great to know this place has a nice support forum. |

I am reading these forums to help me make up my mind about switching to HostGator for my hosting needs. When I read the initial post by Inquisitive Idiot, I immediately concurred with the posts that followed suggesting that he keep hosting and domain registrations separate. Most of my hosting clients came to me in the late 90's because they were using the same company for ISP, web site hosting and domain registration. And, even though the registrations were actually done thru Network Solutions, because the ISP had set them up, the ISP was listed and the registrant and the admin contact. Anyone that remembers what it was like dealing with NetSol back then can imagine what a nightmare that was. Fortunately I only did one of those for a flat fee. After that it was always on an hourly basis. I was even hired as an agent for some foreign tech companies just to manage their NetSol domain registrations because of that.
But I digress. I had been with the same registrar for about 6 years, but that company was recently sold to a new owner that doesn't understand the how important customer service really is. When looking for a new registrar, I avoided GoDaddy because I had read the fine print in the service agreement and had a couple of clients get caught in a pinch, almost losing their domain names. I am also very leery of any company that markets to my clients with advertising that looks like a renewal notice but is actually a transfer contract, which disqualifies even a few more registrars. I have settle on DomainSite.com as my new registrar. So far I have transferred one existing domain and registered on new domain. Migration was instantaneous and so far I have no complaints. Has anyone else had had any experience with them? If so, it would be nice to hear about any negatives before I move all my domains over to them. Thanks for any input I get here. And thanks HostGator for providing such an open forum. Ken |
