I'm a new reseller, have created packages and added accounts that I want to transfer to my account. I have been through all of the documentation, but cannot find a step-by-step guide on domain transfers. Please excuse my ignorance, I"m learning. Here are my questions:
1) If I have account login information for where a domain is currently hosted, I know I can change the nameservers there to point to my account. Once that is done, though, does the customer need to cancel the account with them? 2) What happens to their mail? Is there a way to transfer existing mail to their account here (for those with imap accts, for instance)? 3) Do I then need to do a domain transfer request in order to get the domain registration moved to me? Thanks in advance for any help! |

1) Transfering (nameservers) for a domain is undertaken at the registrar, from what I read in yr message it seems as if you are assuming it is controlled at the host.
A good policy is to buy yr new hosting, set things up (site, email accounts etc) and once u are satisfied the service is ready go to the registrar and change the nameservers. 2) That depends, it should be transparent to the customer but there is the possibility some settings have to change as things (such as account names and logins may for some reason have to vary between hosts). To be honest I have yet to have any problem with customers coming from other hosts to my service but then again I dont have any examples of folks using IMAP. 3)Well there are 2 things here one is changing yr domain's DNS the other is a domain transfer, a domain transfer is what happens when you move from one registrar to another say for example from verisign to godaddy. In your case as long as you have login data (or your customer has) to the current registrar there is no need to transfer. As I said above all you need to do is login to the domain management interface at your specific registrar and change the DNS settings so as to point to your nameservers at hostgator. HTH Antonio |

Thanks for your response Antonio... I think that does clear it up considerably. If the client wishes to make me their registrar, then I will need to do a domain transfer, otherwise I just change the nameserver info on their record, correct?

Can I still use my own DNS server and jsut point the DNS records to hostgator? Or, do I HAVE to move my DNS records?

If you are a reseller you can use "private nameservers", but the IPs are the same.
