Hey everyone!
I'm about to buy shared Web Hosting from HG, but wonder about which restrictions may apply in practice. 1. Are there any Upload restrictions concerning file-size? I think I've read about 60 mb for PHP upload, but FTP should be limitless? 2. Is the Baby plan, which comes without Anonymous FTP, allows to setup kind of a "Guest" FTP account to allow users to upload into specific directories? 3. Can access and filesize restrictions be put on FTP directories for certain FTP users? 4. I am sharing music projects with my bandmate over FTP. When a full song-set has to be uploaded it may reach upto 1 GB even when compressed. Usually it will be uploaded only once and downloaded between 1 to 4 times. Will this get me into trouble with HG even when "unlimited" space and bandwidth is advertised? 5. Is it possible to change the "Primary Domain" at a later point, especially if you are using a Business Plan with dedicated IP and SSL? 6. Last but not least: What happens with your prepaid money (like when you buy a 3 year plan) if you stepup from a shared plan to a reseller or dedicated server plan? Thanks in advance for any answers! ![]() PS: I love the Gators! |

Sorry, for any wrong spelling. Doesn't seem like I can edit my own post here.

1> FTP uploads do not have a limit
2> A dedicated IP is required for anonymous FTP. It would only allow them to upload to specific directories that you specify but I would never recommend to anyone that they use anonymous FTP due to the security risks 3> No they cannot unless you have a dedicated server 4> This will not be a problem as long as you are not just using the account for file storage 5> You can change your primary domain name at any time using the form at http://hostgator.com/ticket 6> The pro-rated amounts are transferred to the new account. |

Thanks alot for the quick answers!
One remaining question regarding upload: I want to make it possible that someone can upload to my site that does not have FTP access (since that would mean full access if I understood right). This likely wont be needed often, but when it's needed it will likely be a large files of several dozend to several hundred mb (a full song set). I searched some through the forum and found that PHP based uploads are restricted to 10 mb or 25 mb max, while the knowledge base seems to imply that 60 mb max are the limit. Given the different numbers flying around, could you tell me which is the current limit for PHP/script/non-FTP based uploads to my site? First I thought I might be able to setup some FTP user with restricted access, but you wrote that this is not possible with shared accounts. Does every FTP user of a shared account really have full access without any means to restrict that? So at the moment it seems as if Anonymous FTP is the only solution for uploading very large files from users who are not meant to get full access to my site? Again, thanks in advance! |

No, you can create a FTP account and give it access to a specified folder, i.e. if the FTP account has rights to folder public_html/uploads it can't access folder public_html or any folder above public_html/uploads.

Ah, great, that should do it, a FTP user with restricted rights to just some sub-directory is perfect for what I need.
