Default Questions regarding VPS

Greetings. I run some php apps at hostgator shared plans for a few clients. The apps are accesed by limited users (a few hundreds), each accessing once aday (monthly transfer: 3gb). So, I guess that is not a heavy use.

The apps use mysql intensivly to generate some reports. So far Im happy with the sahred hosting response but I wonder if a VPS plan will end up in a faster response to generate reports.

I wonder if there is some way to analize current stats from my plan to know if this will happen? I will apreciateany guidance because I will be happy to upgrade to a VPS if a get a better overall response.

Thanks ahead!

Hi,

Like you, I'm on a shared server also with a PHP app which sometimes hit the database with a lot of queries. But even so, I'm always far away from the limit allowed and the server gives fast response. That's why I also created a thread asking if I should upgrade to a VPS.

I didn't decide yet because right now I don't have free time to deal with the migration.

I'm inclined to go for a VPS because of the "freedom" of having my own box to do whatever I want. But I'm still thinking if I really should do it.

After reading some threads, I conclude that in some cases, a shared server is better than a VPS. This may happens if there is not many sites on the shared server or if the sites are low resources. The shared are excellent machines and, for example, having 25% of the memory for 90 seconds is pretty much amazing. If I'm not wrong on shared there is 12GiB of RAM. So, you are allowed to use 25% of that.

In my case, I'm on shared for 1 year and I only saw the memory going over 5% twice. And it was because I wrote a very bad piece of code. As on my server there are 36 other HG customers and most of them are serving static pages with not much traffic, I can say I'm pretty comfortable on that server.

But the VPS idea keeps knocking on my door. Even the VPS solution being 85% more expensive than my actual shared plan.

By the way, I'm thinking on a VPS Level 3.

Thanks for the comments. Mcg: how do you check your memory usage? Is that on a report? IS there a way to know how close or far I am right now from Hostgator limits for my plan?

On the sidebar of cPanel, under the Statistics section, you have Processes Running, CPU Usage and Memory Usage.

For the processes, you can see the list of the processes that are running now and the % of CPU each one is using. You can also kill any process.

On these two posts by chaloupe, he shows graphs of the resources used in one week. I didn't find it on my cPanel, so I think this is a feature available for VPS customers.

They are from Munin Server Monitor, you can install it in:
WHM-> cPanel-> Manage Plugins.
