Default question about subdomains with addon domains

I have an addon domain on my account and wanted to add a bunch of subdomains to it. But when I go to add the subdomains it gives me two choices: there is "mysite2.mysite1.com" and there "mysite2.net" as the two options for entering my subdomains. I choose subdomain.mysite2.net because that one seemed the better of the two.
Since I don't actually have anything to do to the site yet I didn't expect anything to come up but I did want to test it so I added a blog like this: mysite2.net/blog.
It didn't work. I get the Internet Cannot Display This Page notice. My domain was purchased on another site but i changed my dns settings and all.
So what is wrong? I don't want people to have to type in mysite2.mysite1.com to access the first site. Though that is the only way for me to NOT get an error message/ Then I actually get the Index which was what I was expecting to see when I type in just the addon site.
HELP!!

I hope I am explaining this to make sense...if not let me know!

Are you perhaps confusing addon domains, subdomains and sub directories?

Addon domains are stored at public_html/addondomainname but accessed via your browser by typing the actual domain name.

Subdomain means you will have to type, subdomain.hostgator.com whereas a sub directory you would type hostgator.com/subdirectory

Which are you trying to achieve?

If you want an addon domain setup an addon domain via cpanel.

If you want a subdomain then setup a subdomain in cpanel.

If you want a subdirectory, then just create it with the cpanel file manager or your ftp client.

Hope that helps clear it up.

I'll explain better...my problem isn't that I don't know if I want a subdomain or addon or whatever but that my addon domain stuff is acting a little funky.

My domain- cashnrewardsmall.com
My addon domain (which i learned is only treated like a subdomain in cpanel but not to everyone using the site) earnmyprize.net

I am adding a bunch of subdomains to Earnmyprize.net. That is what I want to do. When adding it made me choose to add the subdomain to either earnmyprize.net OR earnmyprize.cashnrewardsmall.com WHICH DO I CHOOSE???
I choose to add them to earnmyprize.net so I made gaming.earnmyprize.net instead of gaming.earnmyprize.cashnrewardsmall.com. Was that the right choice or should I have picked gaming.earnmyprize.cashnrewardsmall.com?
Just to test Earnmyprize.net because I don't have any content there yet...so nothing to check, I added a Subdirectory: earnmyprize.net/blog. I plan to use that anyway so I figured it would be a good way to test it. Well...it didn't work at all. I get the Internet cannot display this page error.

So I guess my main question is what I did wrong with the addon domain and everything I am trying to do with it.

Correct

I did some dns checks on that domain and dns isn't setup correctly. Likely that's why it isn't working. If you have made dns changes in the last day or two you'll have to wait for it to propagate. If you haven't made recent changes then there's a problem with it.

Good- glad I did the right thing.
Now I changed the dns settings a few weeks ago. But it was still showing the cannot display page. So today I went in and was looking around. It said something about a dns problem. So I checked the dns info and it is the same that I was given by hostgator. Now it is saying there is a domain registration error. So i guess the current issue is more with my domain registrar rather than HG.

When I check Earnmyprize.net DNS it has 1and1 nameservers listed. That would cause the problems you have described.

Yeah...I am starting not to like them. I tried numerous times to change it to hostgators name servers but it wouldn't let me. Kept saying that things might not work right if I changed it. I had the correct numbers right in front of me...so I don't know why they wouldn't let me change it. They wanted the NAME of the name server too. And kept telling me that was wrong. I was never asked the name of the name server. Theirs is 1and1 so I entered hostgator and it finally allowed me to go a little further but kept giving me an error. Then suddenly I am told there is a registration error.
I emailed them yesterday and they responded. They said they are going to enter the name servers now so let's see what happens...hopefully this all works out soon!

You need to provide the domain registrar the names of the name servers and possibly IP addresses that you got in your welcome email from HG. That's all they need to know.

Here's a couple of articles worth reading.

http://www.hostgator.com/dns.shtml

http://support.hostgator.com/index.p...id=23&nav=0,13

Hope it all works out for you.

They emailed me and asked for the name servers. I gave it to them. Then I get another response saying they are going to have to go higher up to get this problem fixed. Apparently I changed the DNS of my domain while it was still in the registration process. How long is that supposed to take...how long do they expect me to wait to use my domain???
I didn't have this problem with any other domain I bought from any other place...

I feel your pain.

Hopefully not too long until they complete your request which should only take them seconds to do.

I just heard back. And...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Ok I'll quote so I don't accidently make this guy look like a fool.

"In regards to the registration error being found in your Control Panel,
the name servers that you set have not been registered with Verisign as
name servers. The only way that you can use these name servers is if
they are indeed registered as name servers. Please contact the registrar
of the top level domain and have them register the name servers that you
would like to use. Reply with the control panel password for account
verification so that we may reset the domain."

I replied stating that indeed, they are truely name servers and that I have been using them since January of this year for another domain name. I said that I really didn't need to contact the registrars of any of my domains seeing that those name servers are already registered to my one site and that my second one is awaiting those nameservers on the 1and1 site- their site. And that I had already given them the name servers the first time they asked.
Am I missing something??

Dear oh dear, what should be so simple... the only thing you are missing is leaving 1and1. That quote is a load of rubbish.

Contact them again. If you have a ticket or something start a new one hoping you don't get the same un-support person.

All they need is what was in your welcome email.

e.g.

set name servers for domain name = yourdomain.com

nameserver1.yourdomain.com IP 1.2.3.4
nameserver2.yourdomain.com IP 5.6.7.8

Good luck

Well...I gave them all the name server info again and they had to go in and change it for me because they blocked access on my end. On Thursday morning I was told to wait 24 hours for everything to process. ALmost 48 hours later I am STILL waiting. I just checked the whois and it still says their name servers. In my account it says the right thing. Guess that is what will happen since I am still waiting for it to process.
I just sent them another e-mail asking why 24 hours has extended to 48. Better not be much longer...

Excellent, now you're getting them to finally do what they should have days ago.

If the name servers show up correctly in your account, then you need to have some patience. There is nothing they can do to speed up propagation. It can certainly take 48 hours at times.
