Question regarding to domain registration

Hi, I just ordered web hosting package and registered a new domain with hostgator about 7 hrs. ago. I am still wondering about it progress. Here are my question?

1) How come I still see the domain available to register?
2) When the domain will work properly? I know that it took 24-72 hrs for moving DNS to hostgator nameservers but what's about register with them?

I am pretty concered because I have recieved no information about the domain that I register with hostgator.com. I am looking forward to hear back from you guys. Thanks.
