Although I already have a shared hosting account (just set up), I have a question I wished I'd asked during pre-sales: Am I locked into having the username I provide when I set up my HostGator account be used for my "main" email account?
To explain what I mean, let's assume my HostGator user name is "episkey" and that my primary domain is mydomain.com. I've got my nameservers pointed as directed by HostGator and I've put up a small website that's working fine. Next step is to set up email. The HostGator getting started info tells me that even though it will look like I have an email account based on my user name, I won't unless I take the specific step of adding an account for that name. I don't want to use episkey@mydomain.com as an email address, so instead I add webmaster@mydomain.com. Now, when I look at the Mail Account Maintenance page in the cPanel I see "episkey" listed as my main account and webmaster@mydomain.com listed under that. I am able to send and receive email from webmaster@mydomain.com, and I am able to get to that account via www.mydomain.com/webmail, BUT when I go into webmail via the cPanel, it's the episkey email account that I go into. Also, when I use cgiemail the originating address is episkey@gator379.hostgator.com. Does it have to work this way? If so, I wish I'd know that before I chose my user name -- though I doubt I would have been able to have "webmaster" as my user name. |

It looks like I can accomplish what I want by using Horde rather than SquirrelMail. (I haven't used Horde before, but it is easy to understand.)
If I go into Horde from the cPanel, I have folders for the other email accounts I've created. Thus there is a folder for webmaster@mydomain.com, and I can read email sent to that account simply by going into that folder. If I modify my default identity (via Global Options > Personal Information) I can have the mail I send out while using webmail in this fashion be from webmaster@mydomain.com. Now I can get to my email conveniently from the cPanel and have things work the way I want. |
