Question re: Addon Domains

I have one account with an addon domain. It seems that the "main domain" is just a normal website. The addon domain looks like a duplicate of the "main domain" without adding any additional web pages. Is that how it is supposed to look/work? Like a mirror of the main website?

Second, related question, the files in the www folder seem to be the same as those in the public_html folder. I am assuming that the pages in the public_html are those being served. Why the duplication in the www folder?

For your questions:
An addon domain is a domain that shows files from a folder in your main account. So normally it should not show the same contents as your main domain. A parked domain on the other hand would point to your main domain and show the same contents. You can find some more info in our FAQ on addon domains.

www is a link to public_html, so they point to the same files. Any changes you make in public_html will be reflected in www because they are the same. It's just the way the directory structure is setup.
