Default Question about my swamp shared hosting package

Hello,
This isn't really a pre-sale question as i already have the hosting.
My website i bought is for my portfolio and clan site..

I was wanting to host files so my members can download them from a trustworthy site(my site) it would be a couple of big files like a few gigs maybe as it's games(free games none thing illegal.) and mods for games like battlefield 2 etc. i was wondering if this was allowed i'm pretty sure it is but i didn't want my hosting to freeze because of it.

I have the swamp hosting package with over 1000gigs supposedly so space should n't be a problem but will bandwidth it say's unlimited but will it slow down either of my sites?

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Justin Broshears

Best place to ask would be abuse @hostgator.com make sure you mention the games or mods in question so they can check if it fits in the TOS.

Hello,

Unfortunately our shared accounts are not permitted for this setup. However, you can do so on a dedicated server, as long as the files are legal.

Examples of unacceptable material on all Shared and Reseller servers include:

IRC Bots, Proxy Scripts / Anonymizers, Pirated Software / Warez, image, filedump, mirror, or banner-ad services (similar to rapidshare, photobucket, or commercial banner ad rotation), affiliate servers, topsites, commercial audio streaming (more than one or two streams), Escrow, High-Yield Interest Programs (HYIP) or related sites, Investment sites (FOREX, egold exchange), sale of any controlled substance without prior proof of appropriate permit(s), AutoSurf sites, Bank Debentures, Bank Debenture Trading Programs, Prime Banks Programs, lottery sites, muds / rpg's, hate sites, hacker focused sites/archives/programs, or sites promoting illegal activities, IP Scanners, Brute Force Programs, Mail Bombers and Spam Scripts. Forums and or websites that distribute or link to warez content are prohibited.

Using a shared account as a backup/storage device is not permitted, with the exception of one cPanel backup of the same account.

I don't get it.

Where is the part that prohibits making a couple game files available for download on your site? I don't see it. What am I missing?

I was going to make some PDF and some audio files (not music, more like educational files) available for download on my site. I was also going to make a photo gallery (for viewing, not hosting images for download, though there's nothing to stop anyone from right clicking and saving).

Are those against the TOS too?

GatorChrisD, could you bold the portion of the TOS that applies?

It's quite obvious man, if say 30 people are downloading some files that are 1GB per file, then that will cause a big strain for the other people on your shared server making their sites slow down slower than a snail!!!

Don't forget that RAM and CPU are 2 different things!

Sorry for being so heisty but thats how it is

Okay... Good to know - good tip.

Unfortunately neither of these are mentioned in the portion of the TOS quoted by GatorChrisD. That's why I asked GatorChrisD to highlight the portion of the quoted TOS that would preclude the activities list by the OP.

But you have a point, and Mr. Broshears should note that CPU is mentioned in TOS here:
Quote:
7a.) Resource Usage
User may not:
a) Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.

Feisty?

Also, the problem cleanxhost references--30 downloaders at once--can form a downward spiral if those downloaders, trying to make things go faster for themselves, start increasing connections and automating their downloads.

Default Re: Question about my swamp shared hosting package

I used to manage a gaming clan myself, and as we were a group of no more than 16, I doubt that each member of my group would download the same large file at the same time.

Even though it's a large file, I believe it is more for new members into the community, and wouldn't be downloaded frequently. As for fitting into the ToS, I feel if your site is based upon the gaming, then you should be able to upload files (because they are related to the site content) to your account for download. It's not as if s/he is starting up a file hosting service...

Hopefully a Gator can give a precise answer

It sounds to me like someone is assuming you meant people were going to be playing games on the server, not simply downloading files (If you hadn't said it was a gaming group, what would the answer have been?). Swamp plans allow anonymous FTP, so just downloading files shouldn't be against the rules. If there are so many that resources become an issue then that's another thing entirely, but just downloading files? Nothing wrong per se.

Not from my part, no.

As I mentioned above, if say 30 people are downloading large files at the same moment, then that will cause a strain on the shared server and your account will most likely be closed or something.
