Hey, sorry if this is yet another inane question by a newbie, but I've never moved hosts before and will probably be moving about 20 sites when I get my Hostgator account.
More than half of my sites are running a content management system - some are blogs run by Wordpress, some are sites running on CMS Made Simple or a similar php-based CMS. What exactly does Hostgator do when they "move" a site? Is it a matter of transferring just the files and databases, or does the CMS need to be reinstalled on the new host? Does Hostgator handle the installation, or do I need to do that? (And if it's my responsibility, exactly where in the "workflow" of moving sites do I run the install?) Hope this question makes sense. I couldn't really find an answer within the Hostgator site, and I apparently don't have permission to search. |

Does your previous hosting firm use cPanel? If so, HG can move everything in your account.
If it doesn't, results vary.

Cpanel to Cpanel will set up your files, database, set up correct permissions and even move email accounts. So you need to just change the DNS and you have an exact replica of what you had in previous host.
Otherwise, HG MIGHT moves files and database, but I assume there is a chance for minor errors and issues here and there. I dont think there is any question of reinstalling the CMS, that would require you to do all custmizations again. This is more like moving files and dab, editing the configuration etc. BTW, I am not an HG employee and what I wrote above need not be accurate

Thank you both for your replies. Yes, I currently do have a C-Panel-enabled reseller account so each site has its own C-Panel instance.
I probably won't be moving for another month or so since I don't really have the time right now to do it as carefully as I'd like. Keep your fingers crossed! |

Hi everyone! I'm totally new to HG and I just want to know after I recreated all my email accounts from my previous host, is that the time to change my nameservers?
Thanks. |

If your site transfer was done by Host Gator from another hosting service that uses cPanel, it should normally require no other action to reproduce everthing in the new server location. They even try to give you the same username under the server's /home directory. Were the email accounts not already present when the HG transfer was completed?
