Default question about dedicated

in the future, not sure how near, probably not too soon... but, what i'd like to know is what level of support do ded. servers get compared to resellers...

if anything is wrong with the reseller, be it config, something down, not working, etc... i just submit a ticket and Support fixes it...

is that the same with dedicated or do i fix problems?

obviously HG monitors the server, updates it, etc... i'm not worried about that, but i'm curious about other items as described above.

thanks,
jeremy

software and updates wise will be managed.

for support, you can send in ticket to support.
or faster way will be using the live chat with support.
go hostgator homepage, you can see the live chat feature.

Yeh, you just need to submit a ticket and HG will fix it, (unless it is third party software not working)

Dedicated servers arent monitored, nor backed up

these are quotes from ded. server page, i didn't know about the backing up... how does one back stuff up then?

they don't back anything up, even with catastrophic failure?

Quote:
Monitoring

All dedicated servers come with ping, service, system, and process monitoring. If something should fail you will receive an email notifying you of the downtime.
Quote:
Managed

We will keep your server up to date on security, and operating system updates. Secuirty updates are usually installed within 8-20 hours of their release from RedHat, CentOS or Microsoft.

You will have to buy remotebackup space or get a second harddrive for backups.

You want to be in charge of your own backups. It's easier that way and you know they're happening.

if you get the 2x80 SATA... a cron to copy (of the important stuff anyway) from one HD to the other should suffice, no?

if the one HD fails, does HG swap them out, etc... and get the new one working with my backups?

Depends how it is setup. You mean the second hard drive for accounts?

You can use it if you want. You are flexible to do what you want with it. Use it for accounts or backups or in a RAID. (Though they may charge you extra for a RAID)

RAID is an extra charge. Most people just use their second drive for the actual backups WHM makes; it's backed up accounts, not a mirrored drive. To get actual mirroring you need to pay for a RAID hardware card which I think is $40/month.

Thats correct, and we highly suggest saving your money and doing daily/weekly backups instead to the second drive. Having RAID is not going to save your site when a DB is accidently dropped or someone hacks your wordpress installation!

so, copying to the second HD is the best solution for whm...

if something wrecks on the first HD, HG will get that back up and running and will they replace the accounts from the backups that are saved on the second?

forgive me for all of these questions... i hate jumping into something without knowing what i'm getting into.

There was a good article on RAID in that magazine mentioned on the Gator Crossing.

Once the main harddrive is working again with an OS, having all the accounts restored would be a matter of clicking a button or two, and waiting for WHM to do the restores.

Forgive me for reviving an old thread, but I've noticed Gwyneth?? posting in dedicated lately and she was hoping that "whatever she needed help with" was considered support instead of managed or vice versa, does this mean she has the UNmanaged server so I wouldn't need to worry about the issues she has?

And, is getting the configserver package the best thing to do? Do you need to do "serra's dedicated thread" stuff if you get the configserver package?

Thank You,
Codesight

As one of the Gators noted in the dedi forum, "unmanaged" is not "unsupported". People with "managed" servers still need to do some work themselves, and people with "unmanaged" servers still need to ask HG to do some things.

If I had my own customers on my dedicated server, the extra cost for the "managed" part would be well worth it.

So, I guess I'm asking, is everything paid when you get a managed, by everything, I mean... everything as far as something is broke, a clients email doesn't work, etc...

And, Sam, are there extra things in Serra's that configserver won't do?

Yep, everything you SHOULD need. I've never had them not be able to do something.

Since I was answering.... yes, there are. Things like SPF records in Zone Zemplates and the skeleton directory.

I knew about the SPF and the skeleton stuff... I'm gearing my answer towards more "security" type stuff versus "niceties" type stuff

Thanks for the answers everyone.

In terms of 'security'... configserver will probably cover everything... although I wouldn't exactly call SPF records 'niceties'... but I know what you mean...

no, i guess i wouldn't call them niceties either... they are a necessity, though, not out of securities concern, just a small matter of emails

Really the configserver stuff will cover most of your security concerns (though you should never be too careful).
