Default question about dedicated hosting?

Hi there I have been looking for a dedicated server and I am looking at the “pro” dedicated package.

This will be my first time purchasing a dedicated server and I understand that HostGator full manages the dedicated servers for us which includes installation updates, firewall etc – is that correct? So I weren’t have anything else to do technically to the server from time to time? (As mentioned im new to having a dedicated server).

Also I have seen some reviews and they are saying ‘hostgator are overselling’ and when you purchase the dedicate server it’s still shared as they put a lot of websites/IP onto the same dedicated servers – is this true? The dedicated server is purely and only for the websites I put on the server yes?

I have also been told that, if the website does get larger then usual traffic hostgator might not provide the server anymore as it costs to much for them? What im coming to say is if later in time when my website gets big traffic and I need to upgrade my hard drive and bandwidth is that possible for the dedicated server? Or is 2x 500 GB (dual) & 2,500GB the maximum and if one is looking for something bigger they should go somewhere
else? Or will you guys provide advise with what i can do getting another server and sharing the traffic with two? etc

I will be running a video site (though not hosting the videos on the dedicated itself), so just curious for my further developments.

Thanks for your time!

Thanks for considering us for your server. Your server will be yours and yours alone.

If you go over your band width limit you would have to pay for any overages which at this time is $0.30 per Gb if pre-paid. We also have some unmetered but that gets expensive. Especially for a Pro as it has a 100Mbps connection.

The Pros can only hold 2 drives as they are rack mount. You could replace the drives with up to a Tb each but if you have that much data you may want to consider getting an additional server and splitting up some of the workload as video sites are resource intensive.

I have a managed dedicated here. I would say that there is a learning curve, and while you can get support to do the work, it's also a very good idea to expect to learn some stuff along the way.

Specifically, if you have a dedi, it's your responsibility to know when something is amiss so you can contact HG for help and you'll be making the decisions about what to do about various issues, etc.. It's fine to come in with no real knowledge about it, but the experience of running your dedi is not the same as the experience of having a shared or reseller account.

There are lots of helpful folks in the dedicated forums here that are great about giving advice and helping you get up to speed, so that's a big plus. But I would advise anyone considering a dedi to expect to be learning along the way because without it, you'll have trouble making decisions about how to handle various concerns that come up.

Thoughtful reply from one of our sages.

I've got an unmanaged dedicated--one of the greatest learning experiences for anyone involved w. the internet--and thorough reading of the dedi category has convinced me that even with a managed server, the account holder needs to know what's going on.

Remember, 'managed' does NOT mean 'administered'.

This doesn't mean account holders of either type of dedi need to start out experts, and the forum has helped folks of all skill levels get through it.

Could you explain what you mean by this comment?

If we are talking about shared or reseller servers then HostGator does oversell.

I was stating that, obviously, HostGator does not oversell dedicated hosting.

I think that GatorSteveN stated that obvious thing quite clearly already:

Reading this does make the impression that he/she search on google about something and could not quite understand that "the server is yours" is equal to "dedicated servers are not overselling".

Blame me to make things more clear.

Oh well...

You make things, and yourself, much more clear if you quote the statement/question you are replying/answering to.

Since this topic has "dedicated" on the subject and "server" on the body, most people will associate what I'm saying.

Most does not mean all, and the "forum destroyers" and "off topic makers" that will always dispute what I just say, did say, and will say.

This will be my last message regarding this.
