Tho A few days ago I was saying that I won't dare to upgrade to an unmanaged dedicated server. I'm rethinking that now.
Its been exactly two years that I'm here & I have to say, I'm pretty happy. A year ago, I did upgrade to reseller & I guess its about time to upgrade to dedi, cause I want to get rid of some limitation & I'm planing to move ahead in the business & go from being a freelancer to a small company that provides Web Design - Development services. But before I do so, I have a batch of Qs. I'll do send some to sales, to get official answers, but I'll post those Qs here too cause for me, your experience is as important as the "official answer" and maybe more, as this is unmanaged server. 1. What is the Specifications of Unmanaged Server. Since there is no page for the unmanaged servers, what are the specifications that you got?? I'm interested in getting to know about the HARDWARE specifications & info about the 10/100 connection that the sever has (as I read the unmanaged are connected by a 10 connection). What SOFTWAREs are loaded in the box. (OS, Apache/PHP/MySQL versions, installed modules.... ) I want to know this as I want to have a local machine with the exact same (as much as possible) versions of softwares installed on it for testing. What if I want to add another HD for backup? how much will that cost? 2. Does HG put any "hidden" limitations on the unmanaged servers other than the space & bandwidth (max upload file size, max execution time, error pages...) 3. Is overselling allowed on the unmanaged dedi? Although I don't think I'll be anywhere close to feel the need to do so, but a lot of clients are "fooled" by the BIG numbers & lets be honest... THEY DO LIKE THAT... sadly!! 4. Will HG transfer SOME of my current shared accounts? Keep in mind that I will change my main tld & username. I don't want to transfer all the accounts & I want the transfers to be after a few weeks of the purchase. I want to be sure that things are working fine & only then do transfer SOME of my accounts. 5. What if things do go wrong? what is the worst case scenario that happened with you? other than having all your sites down, that would be a dead end scenario. I surely will get a backup, but I mean what if I messed it up? How much time it should take to restore the backup? will I be able to do so? or I need to ask HG to do so. Does the "30 day money back" policy apply to this one too? I did read on another thread about companies that would manage the server for 20 25$/month, any recommendations? Will I be able to downgrade to a reseller plan if things do end in a dead end? 6. How hard it is? this Q is for people who had/have an unmanaged dedi. Although I think that I'm a pretty fast learner,I have to say that I'm a total newbie to *nix, the closest I have ever come to it is running Ubuntu Live for a couple of hours. As said above, I want to get the unmanaged, test stuff & if I do feel pretty comfortable, only then I'll transfer from the current reseller plan. 7. Different TLDs. As said above I will have a different TLD as the main account here because I want to have my official site up & running just in case the server went down so I can provide support to my clients. In your opinion, what is the best practice in this? this is it for now, thanks in advance for taking the time & reading all these (or maybe you just scrolled to here, did u!?) I'll highly appreciate any answers Pazeh

1.)
P4 2.0 GHZ 1GB Ram 80 GB HDD 10MB Connection 2.) There are no limitations, it is your server, you can set anything you want on it. 3.) Sure is, you get full root access, they don't control anything in it (as long as content is legal) 4.) Yes they will, fill out the transfer form and they can get that going for you. 5.)They offer a management addon for 50$ a month which is the same as the other servers, or you can pay by the hour (75$) in half hour increments. 6.) It is easy for those who are used to WHM and cPanel. Depends on the person. 7.) You can do whatever, host whatever TLD's you want etc. I would say, give it a shot, it is easier than they make it seem.

These are Linux servers, you would use SSH, and install what ever you please. Exe files will not run.. (Unless its under emulation).

Ok then..
Ill just wait for your WindowsOS Dedicated servers... Hopefully you will have a better and easier way of accessing the Root System. (GUI wise) |

If I were to upgrade to Unmanaged, what happens if there is a patch for Linux/cPanel that is released?
If I pay HG the license for cPanel, should they not be responsible for that? What about for Linux? Do I need to do that? What about a problem with Fantastico? I've had problems on the shared packages in the past. |

Couldn't webadmin for centos be installed for a graphical user interface if someone desired such? I have never used it personally, but may try it on a local centos5 server I am setting up.

My server has CentOS 4.5 on it. PHP, Apache, MySQL, etc. you can control.

Of course. Just make sure to specify you *DONT* want cPanel with this because they don't play together that well in my experience.

Unless you've found somewhere that lists specs for all DediKiddy(TM) accounts [our name for the $75 unmanaged dedi] it's probably a good idea to clarify that this seems to be a minimum--it looks as if they've been creeping slightly upwards.
The DediKiddy(TM) could be the "Manager's Special" of servers--whatever comes out of the de-racked storage room that night. But it's a great deal and incredibly educational.

I bet there is a lot of difference between the 1.7 celeron n 2.0 P4.... but then
Another thing, if they will manage the server for 50$/month then the total will be 125! whats the difference then between this n the 175 they have it on the dedicated server's page?(other than the CPU, which is different for every dedi)

The one I got in October is like Yukon Master's--but they knew you could do more, with less, than us. (Also, being the original DediKiddies(TM), we certainly provided HG with more amusement value than a pro like you.)

My point was that if you were telling what one gets if he orders an unmaged server you were not necessarily right.
The original question was Quote:

Thanks for stressing what I was trying to say, quietFinn. We should be careful when discussing the specs for the DediKiddy(TM) because there don't seem to be any. (For our own, yes; as a general description, no.)
Also, if it's possible to get the other servers unmanaged, we shouldn't assume that "unmanaged" means the $75 one we know and love.

just had a talk with michael on live support. the unmanaged dedi is 1.7 celeron by default. I asked him if there is any chance to get a P4 2Ghz; he was not sure abt it and asked me to email sales.
which I did, with a bunch of other Qs, & I'm waiting for reply. If they do provide a P4, I'll get one !!

I'd guess they say 1.7 celeron because that's the minimum. As was mentioned above, you'll get what's lying around, but it won't be less powerful than the 1.7.
Just to confirm what Serra said above, this happens on the other servers too. When I ordered my Standard I got a faster processor and more hard drive space than the specs had listed. They told me I got lucky!
