Greetings,

I am having trouble changing file permissions from the File Manager. In short, I make changes but they either fail or are ignored. For example, I changed a file from 644 to 755 (using the checkboxes). But when I look at the permissions for the file after doing a refresh, they are back to 644. And sure enough, when I go back to "Change Permissions", the original 644 permission checkboxes are set.

I could not find any info in the FAQ besides advice about cgi-bin files, which is not what I'm doing.

Try using an FTP program for uploading your files and changing permissions?

I use CuteFTP and I couldn't rate any other program higher...

You need to chmod the main folder to 777 -- it must be writable or you cannot change the file permissions inside that folder

Hmm.. I don't think that matters since I am the owner and have all rights (first 7). I tried doing it with an FTP program and it worked. My suspicion is that the CPANEL file manager is broken... perhaps needs an suexec setting enabled or something...

If only I had a shell...

I said that because I've had the same problem (and I was ftp'd into it) but once I gave the parent folder write ability, it worked fine.
