Default Pro Dedicated Server SOOO SLOOOWWW...

Hi all,

I hope someone can share some insight about dedicated pro server..

Previously I had been with Bluehost on a shared hosting plan. My website is running an affiliate program Post Affiliate Pro and Support Center software. Both in php and with MySQL databases.

With Bluehost, my website was running incredible fast and great. The only thing was that I was exceeding the CPU with my website and thus I needed to move to dedicated server.

I have been on the Elite server but it was immensly slow so I moved, as Host Gator suggested, to the Pro server.

I only have 1 website on this dedicated server and man, it is SOOO Slow!!! Just 1 website, 1 affiliate program with not even that large of database. I have been in touch with HG so many times to increase limits etc on the server. It is now set at max performance but still it runs so much faster on Bluehost shared hosting.

Could anyone tell me why?? Why is bluehost shared hosting SO much faster then dedicated pro server?

I do notice that bluehost uses
Apache 2.2.6, php 5.2.5, and mysql 5.0.45

Hostgator uses Apache 1.0+ PHP 4.0 and Mysql 4.0. Is this why my pro server is so slow? Do I need to upgrade the server with the latest version of Apache, PHP and MySQL?

Thanks for your feedback!

That's really really odd. Now I have an Elite server. I did use WHM/cPanel, via their Easy:Apache feature, to upgrade to the latest and greatest for Apache, PHP and MySQL. If you just use the process that keeps your current configuration, it'll take 15-20 minutes or so before Apache restarts and everything is up and running.

Of course if you're not sure about this, ask support.

In any case, I have five sites on my Elite server. There are also three message boards, and one of the sites is a busy WordPress blog. I also have Darwin Streaming Server installed, and it gets regular traffic.

It is never, ever slow.

You should ask a tech to login and tell you what the cause is of the slowness as from what you have described points to an issue with your server. If your site ran fine on a shared server, I doubt you need to keep upgrading your dedicated in a quest for performance.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Much apreciated. Do you think latest versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP will increase performance?

I did contact tech support and they say the server is running at max for just this 1 domain. They think it is a poor written script.

Any of you got experience with affiliate programs? Im using PAP (Post Affiliate Pro)

If you ssh in and run "top", does it look like there's a process taking a lot of resources?

Can you provide a link? Maybe it isn't really all that slow... I'd like to judge for myself.

The server may be fast, but you may be slowing things down with a large IPTables, .htaccess deny list, CSF Deny list (which is IPTables too), mod_security rules or some other monitoring function.

Top will tell you about the processor usage, if it isn't used much, then your looking at a filtering issue like those listed above.
