Default Private SSL set up??

Hello.....I am hoping this is a simple question with a simple answer.

I have applied for a private SSL and I have been asked do I want to do it as www.mydomain.com or just mydomain.com?

What would be the better decision and why? Does http or https fit into this decision at all as well?

Thanks in advance to whatever help I can get!

Wendy

It really doesn't matter, you just want the link that is sending the person to the https:// page to be whatever you chose or a security message will pop up.

Then the consensus would be do more people not use the www and therefore just set up without? Or if I set up with (www)...do I have to use the www in all that I do? Or if I use www in all that I do with links (assuming this is a linking issue) would it effect calling up without the www?

Very confused.

If you buy a SSL certificate that set to www.yourdomain.com, typing https://yourdomain.com will give error notice to your visitor saying that connection is insecure unless you purchase wildcard certificate (which costs a fortune). And if your visitor types https://www.yourdomain.com, everything will be just fine. That's your choice wheather to use yourdomain.com or www.yourdomain.com with secure layer. I prefer having my certificate with "www."

Thanks Kelmas....for the definition. I was leaning toward www myself. I am thinking....two private SSL's one for www and one for without as opposed to one wildcard?

Hoping that one day soon all the dust clears that's moving around in my brain!

Wendy, it may be cheaper for you to buy two.

Wendy,

Your average person will use www. If possible you can have the ssl URL as link in your main site website. That way you only need to buy one.

P.S. Because I'm lazy I never type www I just type the site name then hold Ctrl and press enter that will add the 4ttp://www. to the beginning and .com to the end. (4 is used instead of h so the link will not activate) Works for ie6 and firefox here are others
