Primary Nameserver for Resellers

This is probably a silly question but I currently own a domain at GoDaddy.com.
Lets say its example.com

I'm hosting example.com at a company that's not host gator, featuring a full working website. I want to become a host gator reseller. If I'm hosting someones website, I would love their ns1.xxx.com entries to look like ns1.example.com when someone does a whois on their domain.

In order to do this (correct me if im wrong), I need to switch my example.com nameserver entries to post to my new hostgator reseller entries.

If I do that, my old website will be lost since it will no longer point to my old host but to hostgator instead. So my solution would be to simply transfer it to hostgator. So I guess would I just open a reseller account for myself and host my example.com website on there? Is that the best way of doing this?

Sorry for the confusing post! Any advice is appreciated.

No, you don't need to do that.

You need to do this:

1. register your nameservers (ns1.example.com & ns2.example.com) in GoDaddy.
2. in GoDaddy, set those nameservers to point to HostGator nameserver IPs (those you get when you order your reseller account).
3. Where the domain example.com is hosted you create A records for ns1 & ns2, and set them to point to those 2 IPs mentioned above.

The domain example.com does not need to use those nameservers.

I think I'm almost with you, but I'm confused.

I thought name server was the same thing as a domain? I think thats where I'm getting confused.

You change your nameservers wherever you have your domain registered.
