Prepress Forum Semi Dedicated Questions for Forums

I am looking at upgrading to Semi-Dedicated server for my site http://prepressforum.com it is a graphic arts and printing trade site. The Semi Dedicated option is so vague as to the packages merits and details when you are looking at Hostgator's sales page.

I have had to read off other sites on the internet and search Google just to find out what it's features are. I read that it is 4 packages to a server. I can see that the disk is 25GB and bandwidth 500GB which should be enough for my prepress forum right now.

IP ADDESSES? There is no mention at all of dedicated IP address. The hostgator dedicated account comes with 5 dedicated IP addresses. How many comes with the semi-dedicated? How much are additional. I need to run my prepress forum on a dedicated Ip and need about 4 more for other sites.

MAIL SERVICE? Does the Semi Dedicated have it's own dedicated mail server that stands on it's own and can be used as needed. The shared plans have email limits and I need to be able to send a few thousand emails a day from http://prepressforum.com without worrying about off hours or throttling. I know dedicated will give me this power, but what is mailing power and limits of semi-dedicated. This is also not specified in hostgator's sales pages and is important as a feature over shared hosting accounts.

Please Advise. TIA

From what you said with the need for additional sites with dedicated ip addresses, you will have to look into dedicated or reseller hosting. With the need for non-throttled email you would need to consider dedicated.

Hi George, thanks for your answers. Yes, I am looking into it but what exactly comes with Semi-Dedicated in terms of IP address(es) and mail service power/limitations.

I read somewhere on a non-host gator site that the only difference in Semi dedicated and Dedicated servers was that there are 4 people on the server as opposed to 1, and the disk and bandwidth limitations.

I still have no info on the IP addresses and mailing limits of Semi-Dedicated to base a decision on comparing to Dedicated. Do you know Goeorge? Why does Hostgator not display this info clearly to customers for decision making.

Semi-Dedicated is pretty much like shared hosting.. just instead of there beign 400+ sites per box there is only 4 and all the server resources are divided by 4 so you can use 25% of CPU etc, you can only have 1 ip per account and you only get 1 cPanel on a semi-dedi

Hi Sam, that covers all but the mailing service questions, thanks. So the email limits are same as a Swamp or Baby shared package? The email server is still hostgator, not your own mail server with it's own credentials?

You should really email sales @ hostgator.com with this question, which will open a ticket with their sales department. It's best to get an official answer from staff before making a decision.

Shared and Reseller accounts have an email limit of 200/hr. Semi Dedicated accounts all up to 500/hr. If you need to send out more email than what the limitations are, you would need to look into getting a dedicated server.

As far as this goes...Each box runs its own copy of exim as the mail server which identifies as the name of the box. So for instance, if you're on phaeton, Exim would identify itself as phaeton.websitewelcome.com. Shared servers are named with the word gator, reseller servers are not.
