Pre Sales SSL Question...

With Shared SSL would I need to purchase a certificate, or is that shared amungst the SSL users on the server? Sorry, I am new to using SSL but it is a large part of my next endevor.

Its shared among all.

From what I understand though, the SSL certificate is self signed and is therefore useless in any kind of environment outside of testing.

My last cPanel host included the SSL options in WHM so I could pay an extra $1 per month for a dedicated IP address and then set up my own SSL certificates as and when I wanted to. Does HostGator also provide this service?

Private SSL is available on the shared hosting Swamp plan and on all reseller plans. A dedicated IP is $2/m.

So with a reseller package, I could pay $2 / month and then set up my own SSL cert on that IP at no extra charge?

For $2.00/month per domain you can have an assigned dedicated IP address yes. However, for HostGator to purchase and install the Private SSL Certificate for you is a simply $75.00 fee which lasts one year.

Summary:

$2.00 for Domain IP
$75.00 to Purchase / Install Private SSL

Yes, the $2.00/month would be in addition to the $75.00/year.
