Is there a way to get pre-sales access to the support forums? It is a good way for potential customers to get an idea of the type of technical support offered by HostGator.

Only a few sections of the forum are open to guests and unactivated accounts. To get full access it is necessary to have an HG account. Previous posts by HG management have stated that there is no plan to change the current setup.
As far as what is available, there are a number of sections of the forum for Shared accounts, Reseller accounts, Dedicated server support as well as support for scripting and much more. |

Just to be clear--the support on the forum is *not* an official way to get support. Phone chat, live chat, and ticket support are the official support channels. This is just a peer support forum.

Even though the support forums are no the official means of support, they are a good measure of how well the official support channels are functioning. The support forums are a secondary method customers resort to when the official channels have difficulties. The support forums reflect any frustrations customers have about the quality of support. To a degree, they also reflect the level of knowledge posting support technicians have regarding issues that customers are having.

A lot of customers post their problems here before opening a trouble ticket; that is how good the Peer Support Forums are.

I've gotten lots of valuable info from the support forums, and the others are on target- many people do go to the forums before opening a ticket.
If you're interested in the disgrunted customer stories, your best bet is the review forums, which i believe are accessible without full forum access. the crankiest hg customers often post negative reviews. i personally used those to help me evaluate hg's customer service before signing on. I saw how they dealt with their most challenging customers publically.
