New user here, I've search but can't find, sorry if I've missed it.
My main site is up and running. I'm now making the DNS changes. My registration service list my existing DNS details: Primary Name Server Name Primary Name Server IP Secondary Name Server Name Secondary Name Server IP I do have my new server names from the welcome to hostgator email (e.g. ns111.hostgator.com & ns222.hostgator.com) however no primary and secondary IP's for these I do have the IP for my web sites on HG as sipplied in the same email, is that what I input there for the new P&S servers? TIA (once again) Dave B. |

While that's true, if you have a shared account and are using the HG nameservers, at most domain registrars you don't need to (and shouldn't) enter the nameservers' IPs.
In fact, if you see a field for IPs, you're probably on the wrong screen there, even if it says "Hosts". That screen is for registering the nameservers, not for setting them so a domain can use them. What you want is the feature at the registrar called something like "custom nameservers". All you need to do is indicate that the domain name has the HG nameservers provided in the welcome email. It (the welcome email) gives you the IP mainly so you can log into your account before the DNS propagates.

Folks .... tvm for the advice.
Sam .... I was using 111 & 222 just as examples the correct server names for me are: ns689.hostgator.com ns690.hostgator.com How did you find out the IP for 111 & 222? I'm fairly web-design-savy but not very hosting-savy Gwyneth .... I register all my domains with FreeParking in the UK. I've just left 1&1 web hosting (uk) for which I used URL masking from FreeParking for all my domains. I uploaded my main site (http://www.davebeveridge.com) to HG then tried to change the DNS using FreeParking's member control panel the facility: DNS Name Server Modification This section allows you to modify the DNS (Name Server) details held by INWW, CORE, FPDR or EURid for your gTLD and .EU domains. You can change the DNS entries (Name Servers) effectively moving the domain name to another ISP or Hosting company. It accepted my action (to change) without the IP info so I'll just await the 24/48 hour time lag to see if it is unsuccessful . My sites are not commercial sites so no probs of there is a delay Thanks for your responses, I'll get there eventually, Dave B ![]() |

That's not necessarily the case. I've seen some registrars require both names and ips, and some that don't, even when simply setting up the dns for the domain, so I wouldn't be comfortable generalizing in this case.

If you're on windows and go to a command prompt, you can type "ping google.com" or "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where the x's are the ip number, and it will try to connect to that server, giving you some basic info like ip (if you ping domain) or vice versa.

If you are using windows load the command prompt and type:
ping yourdomain.com and you should get a result like: Quote:

You can also use a site like network-tools.com to check.
ns689.hostgator.com is 74.54.128.98 ns690.hostgator.com is 74.54.128.99 |

Resellers and dedi servers can do the latter for their private nameservers, but after that still have to do the former, which is a separate step. Non-reseller shared HG accounts who are using registrars for most common TLDs (i.e., not the ones in small island countries who require requests of this kind to be sent by postal mail) should first try to find a feature/screen/option at their registrar that does not require IP numbers before using one that does. At several huge US-based registries, the labels/names/links for their features are rather confusingly named. (At GoDaddy, for instance, the "Host" tab is where to register the nameservers, and the "Nameserver" tab is where to input the hosting firm's nameservers, i.e., to tell it where you're hosting. I have read that GoDaddy gets hundreds of support requests a day concerning this.)

let me be more specific: i've had registrars require both when changing the nameserver information on the domain record (and NOT setting up private nameservers).

That's why I added the "first look for...before using one that..." bit--clarification for future panicked searchers. Confused newbies and confusing user interfaces are a terrible combination.
