Default Potential New Customer.

Hello!

Long story short: I'm currently paying for a dedicated box from totalchoicehosting.com and, to be frank, I'm not very impressed with their service; if my box isn't going down every other week then it's performing poorly. I woke up this morning to find my inbox was littered with over 1500+ database error emails simply because my projectego.net website had taken a nosedive while I was getting my beauty sleep. Replies to my support tickets can take anywhere up to two hours, too.

My site is still down. Now I'm looking to emigrate to HostGator. I just have a few quick questions since I've only ever been with one webhost:

How would I go about having my websites transferred to HostGator? Would you guys contact my old host and have it done for me? What's the procedure? I have roughly 8 websites located on my dedicated server. If possible, could someone explain to me how I would go about this? I am eager to move immediately.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Steve P.

You can request HG to transfer your sites for you.
Did you use Cpanel on your old host?(makes life simpler for transfer).

I assume all hostgator would need is your help.
Your user details and stuff of your old host so they have access to your files.

Live chat will give you more help than me, Or you can wait for a reply from some of the more experienced board users.

You will surely enjoy your stay hear. Hope your transfer goes smoothly

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your response.

In answer to your question: Yup, I use cPanel. And is it definite that HG will move the contents of my dedicated server for me? If so, I'm sold!

What's support like, by the way? With TCH I have to wait around an hour for a response - and dedicated server's are supposed to be priority; I dread to think how long it takes for those on shared hosting!

I'm on a reseller hosting account and most things i've asked for help with have generally been answered in under 1hr.

I'm pretty sure they'll move it for you, But again i'd suggest clicking live chat button on HG home page and talking to sales.
I'm sure someone else will post here to confirm what your asking.

Also once you join you'll be given full access to the other boards on here.

The peer support hfor dedicated users here is great( i mention this because i've seen a lot of people move to there first dedicated servers & they have recieved a lot of peer to peer support here from other very experienced users)

Ticket support is great, You also have gatorbrent(Owner of the company) replying to forum posts and stuff. So i believe you'll be happy here like most of us here.

Using cpanel in your other host will make life easier for the transfer, I'm pretty sure hostgotar will be able to transfer you over but ask live chat for confirmation before you move.

I think for the most part that you would like the move to HG, but it depends on the ticket load and the question as to the response time. It is an unrealistic expectation to expect support tickets to be answered within the hour.
As for moving your stuff, I believe they will move up to 20 accounts for you?

I"m on a managed dedicated with HG and have been very happy.

HG does not contact your old host for you, but you don't need or want them to. You should not cancel your old account or even tell them you're leaving before you're ready and have the DNS resolved to your new box. Otherwise, you might lose access to something useful to you on your current box. I allow about a week of overlap between accounts just so I can go into the old account and grab anything if need be.

Also, if you have registered your domain with your current host, I would strongly suggest that you quietly transfer it to a new registrar to save yourself potential headaches now. Some hosts become incredibly unhelpful once they realize you're bailing.

Understand that while support here is good, the kind of issues you'll have with a dedicated are different than the shared accounts, and sometimes it will take longer to get a reponse. The support issues are going to be more complicated usually, and will require different skills from your support tech. So patience is a virtue in this case.

Also understand that HG does not directly monitor your dedicated box, even for a managed dedicated. You are responsible for telling them when something is wrong and working with support and/or the other folks in the forums here in figuring out problems. You have a much higher level of personal responsibility on the dedicated than on a standard, shared account.

Contact sales [at] hostgator.com and ask your questions about the move. They will help you. Expect anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days to get your dedicated server set up, and allow the possibility of another day or two to work out any issue that arise from the transfer.

Good luck.
