Default Post-Sales Question...

I've been a very happy HostGator customer for about the last two years, I currently have the Aluminum account. As things have developed over time I've realized that I'm not really selling hosting but doing site design and then hosting the site for the client. I handle all technical issues including site setup and updating. So my question is, would I be better served with a regular Web Hosting account that would give me more disk space, bandwidth, etc. for less money? My clients never touch the backend, they just need the site, email, etc.

Any thoughts?

If you wish to stay inside of the TOS, you are better off with reseller hosting. Technically, if you are reselling hosting (ie someone is paying you) then you can't use a standard setup.

To be truthful, in your case, I would move to a dedicated server. As a designer, you'll find that much better for you. It gives you way more ability and is far cheaper in the long run.

I'm in the same basic business as you are and it has worked well for me, though I've branched off into pure hosting too.

Thanks Serra, I hadn't checked the TOS so your response makes it a no brainer, for the time being my option is the reseller account. If I can get a few more clients I'll go with the Dedicated Server but unfortunately I'm not there yet.

I know the jump to dedicated is a heart breaker, but it is worth it in the end. I would NEVER use reseller hosting, now that I see what dedicated hosting is like. I had too many problems and not enough benefits. (except I couldn't afford the dedicated).

In your specific case, just stick it out with reseller hosting until you can afford the dedicated and you will not have to worry. If you get a dedicated here at HG, you don't need to know anything about servers to run it. Its really like having a dedicated box that acts like a reseller account, but that you can do whatever you want with.

none of my folks touch the backend either... i do full service managed sites. even if TOS allowed putting them under your singe shared hosting account, i find i have much more flexibility and more fine tuned admin ability with the individual cpanels.

serra is right as for sticking it out until you can afford the dedi... i am a poor and lowly shared reseller as well, but will soon be ready to move to dedi. its all part of the planning really!

Thanks for your input on this, I appreciate it. It will be nice when I get to the point of having a dedicated server, but I fear that's a long way off. For now I'll be happy with the reseller account.

I know how you feel. It took me about two years to get to the point where I felt I could afford and was ready for a dedicated server. It came down to money, I could afford not to have one. I found I make more money and feel better about the service I'm providing now.
