Hi,
I'm a new customer. I choose Hostagator to host private and public files. I was happy to see the Unlimited FTP Account and Public/Anonymous FTP ont the Swamp offer. But now, I'm a bit disappointed. First read this : How To create an FTP account http://support.hostgator.com/index.p...barticleid=224 Argh ! What it is this user name "user@domainname.extension". Can you provide something much longer and helpless.Argh again ! You read it well. You can't place your FTP account where you want. You have to create it here: "Director/home/user/public_html". Forget about having clean directories. Each FTP account you'll create will be placed in "public_html". Don't try to override it, it's impossibleThen read this : How to Use Web FTP / browser-based FTP - IE http://support.hostgator.com/index.p...barticleid=311 Argh over ! I'm dead. It's obvious, you can't provide any browser-based FTP link to anyone using Internet Explorer. I know Firefox is better^^, but more than 70% of people on Earth still using IE.On Firefox, see that link : ftp://user@domainname.ext:zepassword@domainname.ext (at least, I can type 56 characters) On IE, be clever and type ftp://user@domainname.ext, then when asked change username "user" by "user@domainname.ext" and enter password. I rock at last but it is so uneasy.PLEASE MISTER HOSTGATOR authorize your clients to create FTP Account where they want on their account root and allow them to REALLY choose the User Name. Thank you in advance. |

The limitation is due to the limitations in cPanel. With the benefits of being able to create FTP accounts and email accounts come the restrictions of having to use the formats set up in cPanel.

In the case that the username is an email address most of the time @ can be substituted for +

Maybe I'm not understanding the problem, but I used cPanel to create lots of different ftp accounts on our old shared account, and some of them went to the accounts "root" (no, it's not root on a shared but I don't know what the term is for the entire directory structure) and some of them went to add-ons and some of them went to subdirectories.

I think he is complaining about the fact that the username is suffixed with the domain name (@whatever.com).
ankama - you are not the only person on a single server and this is why the suffix has to exist. Imagine how many people would want the username 'bob' if there were 50 resellers on a single machine with 100 clients each? If you suffix the domain name then you can have a lot of people with the username 'bob' because they would be unique - bob@domain1.com ; bob@domain2.com - etc etc. It's really not that big a problem

Thank you all for your reply.
So if I get you well, I should better complain on cPanel/IE than Hostgator. ![]() The thing is that I dont understand why I need to use "user@domainname.ext" when I can't create an HostGator whitout providing a domainname.ext to use it. At the same time, I know it's possible to connect to my account using the IP server. But, I don't thing that ALL Hostgator accounts are on the same server. Let say there is 1.000 account on one server, I will understand a first-come, first-serve principe. And if someone want to use an username allready taken, he is able to create "allreadytakenname@domainname.ext" cause who can do more can do less. Am I wrong ? I don't see any limit on that on cPanel documentation : http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cpanel/Ad...P_accounts.htm @vtrain : I will try your tips. Thks. |

Have you looked at the FTP account part of cPanel? You can create an account without using an email address, and your FTP program will work, i.e.,
user aardvark server ftp.domain.tld

Have you read the Knowledgebase ( 4. To the right of “Login:” Type the name of the ftp user. Please note, the full ftp user name will be “user@domain.extention”) ? Can you provide step by step info cause in cPanel if I set username as "johnnyboy"... it will be automatically changed in "johnnyboy@domainname.ext" and my partner and I won't be able to use ""johnnyboy" instead "johnnyboy@domainname.ext" as username (it's simply don't work). |

If its *that* important to you, you will only be able to get this kind of functionality on a dedicated server...
Hardly worth the cost to just type in the extra couple of letters :P |

Serra, I know you will have to believe me on that but I'm not a monkey.
I NEED the WEB FTP link cause I only want to use Host Gator for FTP and send those links to partners who might have not FTP Client installed on their computer. I want to use my account space to allow them to download files (printing product, marketing assets, .pdf or .ppt files, etc...). Some are printers, some are business partners, some have great abilities on computer, some are real newbies. I have a former solution but when I heard about the HostGator offer, it seemed better to me (more space, unlimited bandwith, anonym ftp account, faster to connect, etc...). Simple! Now, about the CPanel, I don't know where you get your info, but when I read the CPanel official documentation (I have already provided the link, but maybe you missed it out : http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cpanel/Ad...P_accounts.htm) they don't talk about mandatory ftp account name with "something@domainname.ext". They only talk about the public_html directory. Maybe ALL CPanel will need ftp account name with "something@domainname.ext", but it is not clearly written and until today I don't know. To end with this, yes now I'm certain I need to find another hosting. Sorry if I made a suggestion you don't care or appear "stupid" for someone who knew this limitation before. Serra, sorry if i didn't understand you well at first (you have noticed I'm not totally fluant in English
). Now, I'm sure CPanel won't fit my needs.I will have a look http://www.omnistardrive.com/. Thank you. At first, I looked for some FTP server space, but the price is so expensive (we need at least 300 Go of space... I'm not the only one to use it and some folks wait too much before deleting old files). |

I'm not sure I understand correctly, but: If you're talking about creating a restricted ftp user account to access only a single add-on domain?
Even though cpanel showed the access to be: ftp.subdomain.maindomain.com AND it showed the user name to be Bob@subdomain.maindomain.com, In my FTP application (transmit for mac), i created a restricted ftp user access to /subdomain.com AND i used ftp.subdomain.com [port 21 of course] username Bob@subdomain.com presto. restricted access to only that domain and the temporary user does not know it is connected to my maindomain.com (unless they use the ip tools that tell you where a domain is hosted etc)... but maybe i misunderstood the premise. |

I, too have been frustrated trying to set up ftp for my clients. It started out with a question about how to increase the max file upload size. I was told I can't increase the max size without contacting customer service asking for an increase in limitation. It was suggested to me to use ftp. The information in these forums is filled with conflicting advice on this topic. Many people give advice on how I, the webmaster, can upload files via ftp. I already know that, as all webmasters should. The thing I do need help with is a way for my users to upload files via ftp, preferrably without asking the user to do anything but make a click or two. This is not an urgent situation for me, but I did notice that other people said that this issue could cause them to switch providers.
I would like to suggest that either hostgator support or some philanthropic member create a simple ftp example. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there that has given up for now, but would be willing to try again if someone could at least prove that it is possible. Thanks in advance. Ron
