Phpwiki passwrd protect

Hi;
I installed Phpwiki but I need it to be password protected so only the members of a restricted group may be able to write and even read the wiki.
I tried to password protect the directory using cPanel, but when I enter the page I can see it (as I shouldn´t without login in) and it doesn´t prompt any login window.
Does anybody have a tip for me?
