Default phpBB versions and migration

The phpBB listed in your Fantastico offering is phpBB 2.0.8c, but the version used at my current host is phpBB 2.0.10 ... so this leads to two questions:

Is the phpBB offered by Fantastico actually more up to date than listed?

And if not (can I/must I) migrate from the later version to the older one?

I'm pretty sure you'd only be able to use the cpanel to upgrade if you used it to install phpBB. I don't know much about it because I just started using it (fantastico), but manually upgrading is pretty easy and there really is a serious security risk so you should backup your site and upgrade to 2.0.11 as soon as you can.

See:
Instructions for upgrading (from phpbb.com)
Information about 2.0.11

Right before I switched hosts my forum stopped working and I couldn't figure out why. Turns out my host was nice enough to change the permissions on a file without telling me (because of the security problem I think). For phpBB problems check the forums over at phpBB.com, they can be really helpful.

I think that you will have to do a manual install of the phpbb script if you want a more up to date version than is offered through fantastico.

Fantastico is a script just like the phpbb software.

Fanstastico makes it easy for you to install other scripts buts only offers the versions of the scripts that it came with.

You won't be able to do "automatic" updates in the same way that you do "automatic" installs from fantastico untill the new version of fantastico is released and Host Gator obtains and installs it.

Yes but the discussion board installation in cpanel itself gives the option of upgrade however it does not list any installed forums but does give you the option to upgrade and that is how it was originally installed..not from fantastico.
