Default PHPBB or Vbulletin for my hosting site?

I'm trying to decide if it's worth spending $160 on Vbulletin or if PHPBB would do the job. The only thing I worry about with PHPBB is security and it getting hacked. Your thoughts?

Thanks!

So it's not possible that vBulletin could get hacked then?

I personally use phpBB but in the end use what is right for you.

Of course Vbulletin can get hacked, but a paid version of a product SHOULD have better support and updates for securtiy problems I would think. I've ran PHPBB for over 5 years on various sites, and they've been hacked more than once.

My other thought is Vbulletin on my hosting site would make it a bit more professional than PHPBB?

go for Vbulletin.

phpbb is starting to look cheap & too many people use it these days. plus vbulletin has very good support, and is very easy to use and set-up.

almost any of these forums you download are easy to hack as the person hacking it has probly looked thought the scripts and found gateways in.

might aswell pay someone to make you a personal one.

I use vBulletin at my forums too. It's far better than phpBB.

Save your money. The HostGator Forum is Vbulletin. Vbulletins navigation features are inferior to PHPBB. VB doesn't update during sessions. "Read" icons only update after you log out.

PHPBB is updated on a regular basis and has a much larger support base. Check out their web page. Some very large commercial forums such as Coast To Coast use PHPBB successfully.

Anything can be hacked. The recent versions (year +) of PHPBB are secure and are constantly being improved.

Give both a try. I did. PHPBB won is the best value regardless of the cost.

YMMV

In my experience, threads and forums are marked read on vBulletin once the page is reloaded, so it's not necessary to log out to get the status to change. Plus, vB 3.5.x has an option to change the handling of marked threads (either through cookies as usual or in the database).

The only reason phpBB is updated regularly is because of its constant security issues. Of course vB has them also, but they tend to be less serious (XSS issues rather than SQL injection or worse) and much less often. I'm not saying phpBB is bad software (I used to use it myself), it's just very outdated and lacks features.

I've used vBulletin since back when it was version 1.x. It is very good and is packed with way more features than PhPBB. The new hack system is the best feature yet. With the drop of a file and a quick upload your hacks get installed. No more editing the php files like back in the days.

what about IPB?? Invision Power Board

I like it more than VB.

If I have to choose between VB & PhpBB.... VB will surely be my choice !

I have been using IPB on several web sites and have had no problems. I really like the software and would use it over PHPBB. However I think that IPB and VB stand on equal groud pretty much ecept that VB may be slightly more advanced and ahead of the game as far as features goes.
