I'll soon develop a forum based on phpBB and would like to know approximately how much bw I'd need. It's going to be a small forum, but frankly I'm totally clueless about phpBB.

Thanks for your help...

Baby croc with 15 gigs bandwidth would be more then enough. A new forum starting off will use under 5 gigs bandwidth a month. But if you really want to be safe and plan for long term growth go with swamp croc 25 gig bandwidth. Of course you could always upgrade down the road.

Would this be a fourm you host, or a forum you want to design?

If you want to design it, you'll need to know the basics of PHP, duh, learn how to access MySQL databases, know HTML. To start off, I would make a tagboard, this will get ya started, then work on a user log in system, etc.

http://robouk.mchost.com
http://www.programmersheaven.com
http://www.google.com

This sites should help ya get started. Good luck.

Edit:
I started looking for some more tutorials after I wrote that ^^
http://www.thescripts.com/serverside...php/page0.html

This one doesn't look like it's th ebest tutorial, but it looks like he know what he's doing...

Use these for some source code examples if you get stuck:
http://surrealdev.sourceforge.net/
http://beehiveforum.net/

Try this one if you don't wish to use MySQL databases (slower the bigger it gets)
http://txtforum1.sourceforge.net/

You can goto http://sourceforge.net/ for more source code but this SHOULD be enough to get ya going.

go with what Gator said, but to add to CRySSiS's list, www.spoono.com has an excellent shoutbox/tagboard tutorial

Sorry... But I'm afraid that if I coded my own forum it would be a resource hog... Did it once under C++ and... Well... Debugging took days because of the frequent reboots my machine needed...

Besides, I don't know PHP (yet). Thanks anyway!

Yep, I know yabb is no good, but I think yabbse is a lighter version, made from scratch... It definitely looks smaller on the bw side, but who knows about db accesses and such...

EDIT: yabb was based on perl while yabbse uses PHP. May be this was the reason because yabb was a resource hog?

Not sure what you're doing on this since this is old...

But PHPBB still requires knowledge of PHP and MySQL unless you are just going to slap up a stock board and call it good. Mods (modifications) take forever to do and it is excessively buggy. Might I recommend PHP Nuke instead? It's light and isn't a resource hog. It's quick to mod and has very few bugs. It is also constantly being updated which is important in terms of security and upgrading takes a mere few minutes. We have gone through MANY different code bases with our site and forums and have found Nuke to be the best by far in terms of ease of use. Even a nOOB could figure out Nuke. Good luck whatever the outcome was/is here!

I reccomend vBulletin, even though it is not free.

I downloaded it, and was stunned. 201 files I believe. Faster than any forum I have EVER been on, and has insane features!!

I only wish I would of gone to vBulletin sooner...

I have ran YabbSE and PhpBB, abd PhpBB is better. No real difference in resources, but vBulletin is best for speed, and file size.

If you still need help, (this post is slightly old), simply PM me. I know PhpBB like the back of my hand, and YabbSE pretty well too. I am now focusing on vBulletin.

www.vBulletin.com/order

Take a look at that.
