Lets say 10~ servers a night starting with gator2. Depending on support tickets, we might increase or decrease the amount per day. Last edited by GatorDaveC; 02-13-2008 at 06:10 AM. |

I'm really looking forward to being able to use the OOP features of PHP5 on HG. I just hope my phpBB3 will not have to be re-installed. Oh, well - I guess I just have to back up my database a bit more frequently.

Hi,
These upgrades are mostly good news. Most recent scripts or programs are now tested only on PHP 5 / MySQL 5 (such as phorum.org, see their front page and their warning regarding PHP 4). I am preparing this migration since several weeks now, here's the result: 1. For MySQL: I see no difference between 4 and 5. 2. For PHP: for me, the main problem was not between the features of version 4 vs version 5, but on the value of register_globals. My PHP 4 code worked without modification with PHP 5 if register_globals = ON. But I have A LOT of work to modify my pages to make them compatible with register_globals at OFF (I have almost 30,000 lines of code). The easy answer would be to say "just put register_globals at ON" when migrating to PHP 5. Not quite, actually. There are good reasons, mostly regarding security, to not do this. A google search will provide you with tons of articles on this subject. And last but not least: in PHP 6 it will not even be possible to change this parameter, register_globals will be definitely at OFF. PHP 6 should be ready by the end of this year. |

![]() By common script, I think it's the ones you can find on Fantastico. I will opt-out too. Hello GatorDaveC ,This is a good news about the migration. About php, will it be the lastest version (5.2.x) ? Do you think you can update this post everyday to tell us which servers will be upgraded ? That will be very good then I could prepare all the migration softly. Thank you very much. Good luck and have a great day ![]() ++ Hadoken Last edited by Hadoken; 02-13-2008 at 06:47 AM. |

Is there be the possibility of having a temporary test environment on a php5/mysql5 server before upgrade? I develop a custom application which should not have too many issues with upgrade, but it would be nice to be sure all is well before having the live environment changed over.

i'm trying to log in to here: http://www.hostgator.com/php5opt-out/
my nameservers are ns565.hostgator.com and ns566... but i can't find 565 or 566 on the server list. im using my normal hostgator username and password. i get this message: "Authentication failed. Please make sure you have the correct information" what should i do? surely it should be an opt-in rather than opt-out.

Don't use your Name Servers,
Look for your Servers Name.

I have other hosting services that allow for php4/php5 & mysql4/mysql5.
PLEASE ALLOW FOR THIS. I can pretty much guarantee you that some of my programs will not work under the upgrades. I am not a full time developer. I do not have time to madly go and attempt to repair things that do not work after this upgrade. Which I am apparently going to only get a few hours notice about IF I check this forum everyday for the next ??? What is the time frame for this upgrade? Considering the small amount of information given to us about such a major hosting changed, I have the strong feeling I am about to get hosed on this. |

PHP4 Is no long supported as of 2008,
And MySQL 4 will also stop being supported. And the fact removing those 2 processes would/could improve system performance.

I'm not asking for a date and time now. I'd just like to know if we will have some way to get advance notice and how much notice when the upgrade on particular servers is going to happen. Thanks Brad |

Do a reverse DNS lookup on your servers IP at http://remote.12dt.com/
The server is GatorXXX.hostgator.com

Can you please explain how upgrading to PHP and MySQL 5.x will affect my installation of IPB 2.0, as I am not willing to upgrade it to any version newer than 2.0 because I have heavily modded it and cannot and will not rewrite all the custom code to support IPB 2.2 or 2.3.
Also can you please explain what will happen if you are unable to upgrade my site's code to support PHP and MySQL 5.x. I'm sure other people running IPB 2.0.x will have the same questions, so answering them would be useful. Last edited by tinytimrob; 02-13-2008 at 08:08 AM. |

I'm assuming any "Fantastico Scripts" will work with PHP5 as they are installed by cPanel?
I have clients using some of those scripts and I'd hate for them to not work. Thanks.

To be sure that I understand how the upgrade process will happen. If I *DONT* opt-out of the automatic updating, Hostgator will change my scripts for me, and test them, BEFORE moving my site over to the new servers with the new PHP/MYSQL?
Pardon me for being paranoid, but my site was the victim of a "painless upgrade" a few months ago, which caused me to move to Hostgator in the first place. I want to make sure my site will end up in a stable state on under the new software. -=Bob |

They will not move your site, they will upgrade the server your site is in.

OK, then I guess I'm not clear on the timing of how things are going to happen. In the original notice, they said:
automatically upgrading your code to a problem-free, stable and PHP5 compatible version. Is this happening BEFORE they upgrade the server, or after? |
