I am not employed by hostgator, so what I say is of no consequence, but I'm pretty sure that the multi-year options are "financial" arrangements: you pay for additional time all-at-once up front, and you get a discount. If you don't want to pay all at once, then you aren't really signing up for a multi-year plan, now, are you?

For a definitive answer, send an email to sales @ hostgator.com

Long term contracts are always cheaper, more discounts for you, but 3 years is too much i guess, times change quickly, you might get stuck with it.. imho

At HostGator, you pay for your hosting in advance. If you sign up for a monthly plan on November 1, 2010, you pay for hosting through December 1, 2010. If you sign up for a three-year plan, you pay for hosting from November 1, 2010 to November 1, 2013.

By default, we also offer a 20% discount on initial invoices for new hosting packages. If you pay monthly, you receive a 20% discount on your first month. If you pay for three years in advance, you receive a 20% discount on your first three years.

As mentioned by a previous poster, HostGator does offer pro-rated refunds. Please refer to Section 6 of our Terms of Service at http://www.hostgator.com/tos/tos.php for more information regarding refunds.
