That is an odd question. There is nothing that you need/can do with mySQL that requires a path.

If you need to administer your database/s over the web, cPanel comes with phpMyAdmin

From your cPanel click on 'MySQL Databases' and scroll to the bottom of the page, where you will find the link for phpMyAdmin

I have a setup file that asks for the location of MySQL, that's why I was asking (so I'd still appreciate knowing ...)

But since you suggested using phpMyAdmin ...

I've been using that successfully for a lot of operations, BUT I'm having problems creating new databases from within it. And that's because when I click on the phpMyAdmin button at the bottom of the MySQL page, phpMyAdmin loads and says that I'm "running on localhost as nsaks@localhost." But when Fantastico installed Drupal for me, it created the database named nsaks_drpl1 with user nsaks_drpl1 with all priviliges. I don't see how to make my HostGator user, nsaks, be a user for the database. If I try to create a user nsaks from within MySQL, it creates a user called nsaks_nsaks.

Any suggestions?

When you connect to phpMyAdmin from cPanel you will connect as the user (nsaks), and you will see and be able to work with all the databases created under that account.

But you can't create new databases in phpMyAdmin, you create them in cPanel.

The think is that I can't guarentee that it is standard on all servers. I've never seen an application that asked for the location of mySQL and I don't even know where it is on my local server. The actual location isn't something that is usable. mySQL is a service, so its location isn't something that would come into play.

You might try using "localhost" where it ask where the database is located.

I agree, it can't be asking for an install path.

OK, thanks.

But just so I'm sure I understand - are you saying NO ONE can create new databases in phpMyAdmin? It's ALWAYS done from cPanel?

You should be able to simply enter "localhost" for that field. The server would handle the rest I believe.

Edit: DOH! Day late , dollar short...

That is how it's set up in HostGator, and as far as I know everywhere where cPanel is used.

But for example in my local test system I can create databases in phpMyAdmin.
