My site visitors have been reporting lag and general connectivity problems, and I have experienced some lag myself. I did a ping test and got some pretty disappointing results. 22% packet loss.
Ping statistics for 66.246.110.247: Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 78, Lost = 22 (22% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 30ms, Maximum = 50ms, Average = 24ms A traceroute is showing pretty quick speeds up until I reach the hostgator server, when problems start. Is there something that can be done to remedy this?

The network is a mess! They lit another oc12 line few hours ago that was suppose to solve all the packet loss. Few minutes after they lit that line there was a fire. ahhh all is a mess. Give it a few days for them to get things back to normal.
