Are you sure it not from a flood or attack? When I find my forum slow or non responsive I quickly hit error log and find some yahoo bombarding my site with request. I then ban their IP. I ban 2-3 IPs a week from this.

Even some but very few are legit, I had to ban a certain yahoo crawl server as it came in with to many connection and sat there all day.

Yahoo has hundreds of ip:s. Try this instead in a robots.txt file:
User-Agent: Yahoo! Slurp
Disallow: /

User-Agent: Slurp
Disallow: /

But this wont solve the server down problem.

Actually, most of us probably don't want to keep out Yahoo entirely, we just wonder why it has to bombard our sites with so many visitors when Google can index the whole thing with one.

Try these lines instead - it's knocked them down to manageable numbers for me.
