I've been using HG for almost 2 years now. Overall I'm VERY satisfied with the service and cost.
I'm hosting a medium sized forum (about 300-500k pageviews a month) for about $10 with a Baby plan. The server speeds are usually great (we had some lag a while back, but it was resolved by the very helpful support team). There's also many features that I haven't been able to find with any other webhosts; remote MySQL, php.ini, and multiple language support (PHP, RoR, Perl, etc.. are all quite handy for a web developer. But there are some downsides to HG. My biggest issue is that support is either extremely good or extremely useless. It takes 2-3 tries to get something done because the answers differ from one tech support person to another. For example, when I tried to get my primary domain folder changed from public_html to public_html/domain, I had to go through a series of people and tickets. Other times, support gets the job done within minutes and with a good explanation of what went wrong. It's like a coin toss. Another issue is that there is no real option to grow with shared hosting. Once you reach a certain point in traffic, you're basically forced to get a VPS. The downside to a VPS is that you don't get that safe management aspect of shared hosting, where everything is simple and worry free. I would love to see a buffed up cPanel plan with more resources (I wouldn't mind paying $30-$50 a month for something like this!). So in conclusion, I would recommend HG shared hosting to people with small sites who want a feature rich hosting plan without too much hassle. |

I also wanted to mention that I just switched my primary domains and it seems like every support person I contact doesn't want to let me use public_html/domain as the document root anymore.
Great, now if I install something like Wordpress or a script gets compromised on public_html, it'll have access to ALL my websites. There's no reason that I can't get the same settings done before I switched primary domains. |
