Default online backup storage

Hello,

Anyone out there can recommend a good online backup storage company and an appropriate software to go along with that.

Hostgator's Swamp account may do but is not large enough. Also, they do not provide much smaller disk space for the reseller account (which I have).

Tx,

Jacob

You need an online backup that is larger than 200gb? You are not going to find that anywhere cheaply. It would be cheaper to buy a server and use that as online backup or rent an unmanaged server, and use that for your backup. 200gb is hard to find in a backup system, for a good price.

Well, that is not quite true.

Mediamax.com offers 250 G for about $10.

anyway, what software is available to manage this sort of backup?

hi,
i would recommend bqbackup.com they have excellent service and i never had a problem with them.
I think you cannot have a offsite backup solution on a shared account if you have a dedicated box, you can use rsync as the best way out.

see ya,

Yes, but only a moron would use a 250 G account that only allowed 25 G download per month as a backup for a server.

If you do use the 200g space, then shared hosing isn't for you.

If you need to just backup a small part of it. Either dl the backup or use a third party backup with ftp. cPanel has the setting to backup to an ftp.

I use strongspace.com. It's certainly not cheap but the performance and support are great, and I trust them. They also don't cap your bandwidth (as long as you're not abusive.) In addition, each plan comes with a joyent.com subscription and a textdrive.com account.

That is fairly expensive. For about the same price, you could get a whole server as a backup. For the price of 200gb, it would be far cheaper to just get a server with a 250gb drive and use that.

For my system, I can get a backup server (a dedicated backup server, no access to the net, but local lan access to my server) with 400gb of storage for $139.00 a month.

hi Serra,
you may be able to maintain a backup server, keep it with restricted access. but thats little expensive and if one has internet connection thats quite slow.... god knows what i mean.

bqbackup offers 100GB storage with unlimited backup traffic for 20$/mo,
and that service does have good repo. iam not paid or sponsored by them, iam amazed with level of service they give so want to share with u all.

one must check webhostingtalk for repo of bqb.

see ya,
pk

Thanks Slapshotw for your reply
Thanks ghpk for your reply

I checked both plans that you guys posted

Strongspace offers 100G at $100 a month. (recommended by Slapshotw)
bqbackup offers 100G at $20 a month. (recommended by ghpk)

The question to slapshotw is why stay with strongspace when you have bqbackup at a significantly lower cost.

The question to ghpk is why use bqbackup when hostgator offers 200G at $15.

All I am looking for is an offsite remote catasrophic backup service. Yes I do ongoing backups using Retrospect to a local drive but that does not provide me any security in the case of a fire or theft. So the idea is to do a remote incremental backup on a daily basis to a remote site.
Is there anything wrong with hostgator's service for this sort of purpose? Do the other companies offer anything extra for the higher price that they charge?

Tx,

Jacob

Well let me say that after reading this thread at Web Hosting Talk, I am certainly considering opening a bqbackup account.

However your strongspace account also gets you joyent (more important to me) and textdrive (not as important to me), so it's a great bundled package deal. I also enjoy and trust strongspace and it's hard to find a need to change after developing that kind of relationship.

If joyent and textdrive don't appeal to you though, bqbackup appears to be great. Sounds reliable from the WHT reviews as well.

hello Matt (slapshotw),

While we are waiting for ghpk's reply (why prefer bqbackup [100G at $20 vs. hostgator's swamp account of 200G at $15?) , I would appreciate it if you could explain what joyent and textdrive are.

If you have a slow connection, then that is the WORST way to do it. It would be very cheap, basically, free.

I guess that is in the fine print: SSH encryption

Serra,

Sorry - did not understand your answer. Are you implying that hostgator's connection is slow?

What does "SSH encription" mean?

Hi,
sorry about delayed reply i didn't checked back on forums today.

hostgator will not backup semi-dedicated or dedicated server accounts.
for dedicated you can use bqb as your best option as they could either backup your backup drive(if u have it here) or backup entire server on nightly basis, using Rsync which would only update what has changed.

We are discussing off site back up so hostgator or backup drive here is out of the question.

yes rsync is secure and if you mail bqb they can provide you most of the details, even setup the backup solution on your server for free.

Textdrive is a host, but you get a lot more privileges and installed modules and processes than the typical hostgator shared server. I use it for things I wouldn't or couldn't use HG for. Joyent, I'd just recommend checking out their website-- joyent.com.

Hi guys!
There are many online companies now days offering online services when we talk about backup. The one I’m using right now is ZenOk Backup
It's very light and fast, I totally recommend this one. However if you know another let us know

Here is the link to check out http://onlinebackup.zenok.com/

would be safer is to buy your own external USB Hard Drive of 2 TB or bigger for 100 bucks and safely download your important stuff... like these puppies USB HDD External
Online backup services is a rip off so far, too expensive too unreliable, but a good idea though but problem with uploading later when you want to recover your data back up... but I think ISP's uploading speeds will catch up with download speeds.
Looking forward to Virgin Media 100Mbps/10mbps fibers
