I would like to see HG offer Actual VPS were you can install scripts and stuff like shoutcast, etc.
With a good amount of space and bandwidth with the exception that its priced below 50 dollars and can beat other vps hosting providers.

I also think VPS from hostgator would be a good idea. I don't need one now and probably wont for a while but when you grow out of shared it is a huge jump in price until dedicated.
Of course there are other hosts but HG are really good and VPS hosting from them would be a great in-between step.

Its been asked here before and someone from HG said they have no plans of offering them as they have dedicated servers for $75

There cheapest is $174, which is far more expensive than a normal VPS or shared so HG offer no in-between ground.

Go here: https://secure.hostgator.com/billing...derwiz.php?v=3
Fill in a domain name and using the select dropdown, you'll see an unmanaged dedicated server. It is $75/month. Or, you can click here and do the same thing, but the package is already selected for you. https://secure.hostgator.com/billing...ackage&submit=

Oops sorry didn't notice that, it isn't listed in the normal place.
But if the unmanaged server goes wrong, does that mean they wont do things like forceful reboot if it isn't responding or they wont reinstall the OS. Also They could offer a managed VPS for $50 at the least.

Yeah Ok I can see that they already offer good dedicated options but semi-dedicated would fill in the middle ground between shared and dedicated, I don't think it would possibly do any damage to implement it.

They are kind of a relic, anyway, in these days of huge limits for shared plans. Small, unmanaged dedis are probably the way of the future--they're not nearly as complex to run as a few years ago, and as HG has said, unmanaged does not mean unsupported.

Its not really the space and BW that would make a shared user upgrade, as I have seen Brent and other people say, resources are used first and on a semi-dedicated/vps then you are set a certain amount of RAM such as 512Mb or 1Gb and then that is yours, you cannot get suspended for it. There are also other advantages such as you have an OS to just your with root access to anything, just like a dedicated but cheaper.

The semi-dedicated offered very few advantages over the old shared plans, and even fewer over new ones. Essentially you shared the server with three or four other accounts instead of a zillion. Like living in a four-flat instead of a highrise apartment. Or, if you're old enough to remember telephone party lines (not the social networking kind), sharing the line with only two or three other families instead of 12 or 15. Reseller accounts were not offered on the semi-dedis, and neither was there any more access than on regular shared accounts. Unmanaged dedis are much cheaper for a hosting firm to support, and the extra charge for the managed part of managed dedis probably turns a nice profit, on average.

the problem is still there !! they are unmanaged...
I for myself I don't dare to go for an unmanaged dedi, as I don't have any clue about *nix. Like I would like to have an IP address for myself, which resellers do lack, for everything & specially for sending emails, so i don't have to deal with the blacklisted email addresses.

You could pay the $75/month for the DediKiddy (TM) and pay some company $20-25 for server management.... still managed for under $100... not the most recommended solution, but doable..

HG used to offer a semi-dedicated, which is not really what it seems people in this thread are asking for. The semi-dedicated was a large shared account, essentially, with a low limit to # of people on the server. A VPS is like having a mini-dedicated, where you have root access and can install things at will.

So what if the kernal fails, or something unmanaged means no updates aswel they wont take care of your system thats basicly what it means.
I mean go try updating your bootkernal Yay bootfailure and they charge ye 75 dollars a hour. Im in luck that im from europe so isent that big of a deal here 1.44 euro is like 1 dollar atm good for my busniss lol But stil I mean they shoud offer a middle way, Like lets say my whois lookup says there are 400 websites on my server. Now I pay 12 dollar or something a month for it. Now what say if they put 100 clients on the same server 1/4 and ask a price of 48 usd for the spot on the server. I think hostgator shoud consider this. Maybe offer the dubbel cpu restrictions and you got yeself a fine deal. Even if they shoud do 4x as much compare to the clients on it is 1/4, but if they only do 1/2 the stability of the server woud be greater cause its for bigger sites anyway. I think this is a safe option in my opion |

Interesting you say that...Hostgator used to have a deal exactly like you suggest. Only a few people on the server, more resource access, etc... for I think it was $75/month. They got rid of them a few months ago in favor of the unmanaged dedis (no clear explanation why...perhaps they didn't sell well, or weren't nearly profitable enough?).

Slapshot, if you really think about it, do you really think any1 woud buy a unmanaged dedicated server over that?
That option I yust said is more availible to the general public, remmber most users are windows users and understand windows commands. Unix commands are way difrent from that and requer experience. By that I read your short on staff, so people want to hire your staff to fix there problems thats a nother issue? People will cause issue's if there not guided in a world they dont know and requer more help. I think what ive said and aprently what you have had is much better then a unmanged dedicated server. Also its more frendly to the users your serving. If I woud get suposeded for to much cpu uses or something simulair, hostgator woudt be my first choise. Simply cause the step of expenses is to big going from a normal account aka 12 usd or even lower to a real managed server over 150. Wish the general webmaster clearly needs in general. There is no middle way and I can totally feel people complaining about this. Cause if I woud experience the same I woud be anoid aswel. I think the plants you have now, dont match or follow up and unmanaged might be less troubling for you then, managing suspending to big sites on the shared server. Thats why your firm might have closed it. But I think it stil shoud be there. Maily cause even if the abuse was higher its the same on the shared servers. Maybe you shoud monitor a site before susending it, and see if its fit to put on a shared inviroment on 1/4 and if its not offer a dedicated plan like a custom deal for each person that is realistic and not fiction like now getting a dedicated server whyle you might use 15% of its total in max lol. |

The unmanaged dedi is a great deal, particularly compared to your proposal for slightly-less-shared accounts. $75 for unmanaged dedi; $48 for a regular shared plan that exists with only 99 others on the server. No thanks. "Unmanaged" doesn't mean unsupported. First, if anything happens to the hardware, it's on HG to fix. Second, the software in place on the dedi makes updates pretty simple. Third, learning how to take care of it has been interesting, relatively pain-free, and very educational. IMO, people who do or hope to make their livings via the internet could not make a wiser investment.

Mate, if you have a really active webshop true ecommerse you asked the host firm to install it, and you paid some1 for the new layout and did your own settings if possible.
That gy is not gonne learn it anytime soon, simply cause there not open to it. People like beeing served on a golden platter service is everything and if the service is bad then you wont expect getting any customers anytime soon. For you it might be interresting to learning unix commands, but I think hostgator disagree's on this point forcing people to learn unix commands cause its there cheapist plan after shared inviroment. 100 people on a server that is managed and fully monitored by hostgator 24/7 is something id prefer then a left alone server. Hardware failure, hello ? I know what renting is ye know most people do ofcourse they have to replace it you dident buy the server ... I make my money true the internet, also for serving other people so I know what im talking about. People like service and like to be helpt a lot sometimes to much but thats how they will go for your firm that little bitty exstra you did for them. Thats what hostgator dus for others like moving there site to there servers for exampel something rare host in general dont do that or want money for it. And if I need to buy a unmaged 1, id rather have the option to send a pre-configured server to them and they plug the server in there rack. What i mean by that is that is the most atractif option to me. But hostgator thinks of the majority not me or you, and most people want a managed location even if its shared you got more power to spend. And its the safist and most eassy way to go and a good step before a dedicated server. Atleast that is my opion, keep in mind not every1 studied level 4 service management programming, 3d platform developing and etc. There are normal people that dont know that much with big sites and let people do all the work. |

HG used to have the VPS for awhile, clearly there wasn't enough demand for it otherwise they'd still be offering it...
I don't disagree with you on most of these points, but as a business student I understand that if there isn't enough demand and you can't create enough -- or make money at it.. don't sell it.... |
